Farhad Moshiri has agreed a deal to sell Everton to American investment firm 777 Partners. The British-Iranian businessman, who owns 94.1 per cent of the shares, will sell his entire stake to 777, who have also invested in Sevilla, Hertha Berlin, Genoa, Vasco da Gama, Standard Liege, Red Star and Melbourne Victory. It will bring an end to Moshiri’s disastrous reign in charge at Goodison Park in which Everton have spent around £700m on players in seven years, only just avoided relegation in the last two seasons and are winless in the Premier League now. Moshiri, who has seemed short of funds since his long-time business partner, Alisher Usmanov, was sanctioned after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, had been searching for investors to help fund Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which will cost £500m and is due to open in 2024. He was in talks with American firm MSP Sports Capital and real estate tycoon Maciek Kaminski, but his initial plan was to sell a minority share. Moshiri plans to write to the club’s minority shareholders to seek their support for the deal, which Everton are confident will be ratified by the Premier League and should be completed in the calendar year. Moshiri said: “The nature of ownership and financing of top football clubs has changed immeasurably since I first invested in Everton over seven years ago. The days of an owner/benefactor are seemingly out of reach for most, and the biggest clubs are now typically owned by well-resourced PE [private equity] firms, specialist sports investors or state-backed companies and funds. “I have been open about the need to bring in new investment and complete the financing for our iconic new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, on the banks of the Mersey, which I have predominantly financed to date. I have spoken to a number of parties and considered some strong potential opportunities. “However, it is through my lengthy discussions with 777 that I believe they are the best partners to take our great club forward, with all the benefits of their multi-club investment model. And Alysha Alli, who heads up the interior design team for Redrow, recommends “balancing the warm outside with fresh décor inside”. From tones and textures to ornaments and aesthetics, she says finding a style that complements your unique personality is essential to perfecting your interiors this summer. “Our homes have an undeniable impact on our wellbeing, so it’s important interior design incorporates elements of nature during the summer to help boost our energy,” suggests Alli. Here, she shares some key elements to help you get the right vibe… Go luxe-boho Layer patterned and textured throws with tassels and washed-out prints in natural fabrics like linen and 100% natural cottons, says Alli. “Aesthetics that embrace imperfections are entirely on trend, so observe your space and see where you can incorporate sustainable pieces such as hand-crafted ceramics too, then fill these with tall pampas and tactile bunny tail grasses for a gentle texture and aesthetic.” Make indoor plants a centrepiece Plants can complement natural materials such as real woods, ceramics and natural stones, Alli highlights. “Go for a cluster of different heights – ensuring the tallest is at the back of an arrangement, placed directly in the corner of your room on the opposing side of entry. “This will make your space appear more spacious and airier, perfect for cooling down the temperature.” She says cacti also look perfect catching the light on a bright en suite or main bathroom windowsill. If this space doesn’t get a lot of natural light, try aloe vera which thrives in humid conditions. Bring the outdoors in Alli says incorporating feature wallpapers in matcha colours and forest hues to more subdued olive greens will introduce a flow of serenity across your interiors. “Tones of green are also known to boost positivity and promote calmness throughout the home,” she adds. Depending on your budget, she suggests placing a khaki rug under a rich walnut coffee table for a warm aesthetic. “Exploring these deep earth tones and mixing with botanical greens really brings the beauty of nature into your space.” Add pops of colour around the home When creating more social and entertaining spaces, bursts of colour help bring rooms to life. With blooms flourishing in warmer weather, think about adding fresh flowers into an earthy rotund vase, suggests Alli. When arranging flowers, she likes to create a greenery base using foliage such as ivy, moss, eucalyptus or fern, then adds focal flowers and filler flowers into the gaps – aiming for a dome shape. Another way to boost your wellbeing – and colour code – is with funky photograph frames mounted with summer holiday snaps. If you’re looking to do something larger and more impressive, Alli suggests creating a cosy reading nook; or transforming your office space with Seventies-inspired furniture shaping. And who can resist a rattan weave retro style egg chair to chill out in? Switch to vivacious colours Think peachy tones and luminous apricot paint finishes – refreshing hues which Alli says awake the senses. “While it may not be the obvious choice for everyone, when paired with the right grounding pieces of furniture such as a bouclé or rattan accent armchair, it makes your interior feel contemporary and alive.” Take this a step further by complementing your design with an irregularly shaped mirror. “Balancing the straight lines of contemporary furniture with the rounded nature of accent pieces will draw attention to their detailed design and create contrast,” adds Alli. Scientists have finally found a “demon” subatomic particle that was predicted to exist nearly seven decades ago and speculated to play an important role in the behaviours of a range of metals and alloys, including superconductors. Physcist David Pines in 1956 theorised that electrons, which normally have a mass and negative electric charge, can under some conditions combine to form a composite “demon” particle that is massless, neutral and does not interact with light. These theorised interesting properties, however, made these particles elude detection – until now. After a nearly 70-year search for these subatomic entities, researchers, including those from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, have finally found signatures of Dr Pines’ “demon” particles in the metal strontium ruthenate. “Demons have been theoretically conjectured for a long time, but experimentalists never studied them. In fact, we weren’t even looking for it. But it turned out we were doing exactly the right thing, and we found it,” study co-author Peter Abbamonte said. Electrons – which are distributed in different energy bands within atoms – are known to lose their individuality in solids with electric interactions making the particles combine to form collective units. With some threshold energy, studies have also shown electrons can form composite particles called plasmons with a new charge and mass. However, the mass is so large that these plasmon particles cannot form with the kind of energies available at room temperature. Revelations on room-temperature semiconductors are considered to be one of the “holy grails” of physics. But Dr Pines theorised that if a solid has electrons in more than one energy band, as many metals do, their respective plasmons may combine in an out-of-phase pattern to form a new plasmon that is massless and neutral – a demon. Since these special particles are massless, he argued they can form with any energy and may exist at all temperatures – leading to speculation that the demons have important effects on the behaviour of some metals with multiple energy bands. “The vast majority of experiments are done with light and measure optical properties, but being electrically neutral means that demons don’t interact with light,” Dr Abbamonte explained. So a completely new experiment was needed to detect them. In the research, scientists were studying the compound strontium ruthenate as it is similar to high-temperature superconductors – a special kind of material where electrical resistance vanishes. For a survey of the metal’s electronic properties, they synthesised high-quality samples of the metal. They then applied a technique to study the metal that uses energy from electrons shot into the metal to directly observe the metal’s features, including plasmons that form. During their observation of the electron interactions, scientists found something unusual – an electronic mode with no mass. “At first, we had no idea what it was. Demons are not in the mainstream. The possibility came up early on, and we basically laughed it off. But, as we started ruling things out, we started to suspect that we had really found the demon,” Ali Husain, another author of the study, said. Researchers then sought to calculate how electrons are distributed across bands inside strontium ruthenate. Predictions by Dr Pines indicate there are specific conditions when “demons” are likely to form, and it remained unknown whether strontium ruthenate would have the particle. “We had to perform a microscopic calculation to clarify what was going on. When we did this, we found a particle consisting of two electron bands oscillating out-of-phase with nearly equal magnitude, just like Pines described,” found Edwin Huang, another author of the study. “Our study confirms a 67-year-old prediction and indicates that demons may be a pervasive feature of multiband metals,” scientists wrote in the study.
