F1 Italian Grand Prix LIVE: Qualifying updates and FP3 lap times at Monza
Max Verstappen is eyeing a record-breaking 10th F1 win in a row as the paddock rolls around to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix this weekend. Verstappen, picking up where he left off before the summer break, won his home race in the Netherlands last week to equal Sebastian Vettel’s record of nine consecutive grand prix triumphs. The Dutchman, who now has a mammoth 138-point lead in the championship over team-mate Sergio Perez, is the overwhelming favourite in Italy having also won in Monza last year. Mercedes endured a difficult weekend last time out in Zandvoort but will be buoyed by the news that both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have signed contract extensions until the end of the 2025 season. As for Ferrari, they head into their home race short of form having not won a race since Austria last year but will be hoping for a strong performance in front of the home tifosi crowd. Fernando Alonso, too, will be looking to back up his podium in Zandvoort with another top-three showing at Monza. Federal funds will pay to send Iowa troops to the US-Mexico border, governor says
About a hundred Iowa National Guard troops will be sent to the U.S.-Mexico border for the month of August in a federally funded operation, Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Wednesday. The move reflects a broader trend across the country of Republican governors joining forces with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to counter President Joe Biden's immigration policies, which they say have created a crisis at the border. “Since the administration refuses to invest in securing the border and protecting its citizens, Texas has asked other states to help, and Iowa is ready and willing to assist," Reynolds said in a statement. The Biden administration sent 1,500 active-duty troops for a 90-day deployment in May, amid concerns that the end of asylum restrictions linked to the pandemic would lead to an increase in illegal border crossings. Even when the restrictions were in place, a record number of people were crossing the border. Instead, numbers have fallen, and 1,100 troops will conclude their 90-day mission by Aug. 8, a defense official said on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss details ahead of an announcement. The remaining 400 will be extended through August 31. An additional 2,300 National Guard troops remain at the border under federal orders. This is the third time since 2020 that Reynolds is sending troops to the country’s southern border. Officers with the state’s Department of Public Safety will follow National Guard troops at the end of August for the month of September. The governor’s office indicated in May, when the deployment was first announced, that about 30 public safety officers would be sent. Iowa's neighbor, Nebraska, will also dispatch about 60 troops to the southern border in August, Republican Gov. Jim Pillen announced Monday. Governors in Florida, Virginia and South Carolina, among other states, have made similar deployments for Operation Lone Star, a multibillion dollar operation that is distinct from federal efforts, and whose lack of transparency and metrics have drawn questions. ___ Associated Press writers Tara Copp and Rebecca Santana contributed to this story from Washington. What is pani puri? The South Asian street food featured on Google Doodle
Today's Google Doodle (12 July) is all about the South Asian street food pani puri. Head to the search engine’s home page and you’ll be greeted by a candy-colored cartoon, celebrating the dish which consists of a light, crisp deep-fried shell stuffed with potatoes, chickpeas, spices and flavoured waters. The interactive design then invites you to fill out hungry customers’ orders: choosing the puris that match their flavour and quantity preferences as quickly as you can. So why did Doodle choose this theme – sweet though it is – for a random Wednesday in July? Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Well, on this day back in 2015, in the Indian city of Indore, a restaurant called Indori Zayka and Dainik Bhaskar earned itself the world record for serving the most varieties of the treat. It offered punters a lip-smacking 51flavours, under the guidance of Masterchef Neha Shah, as Google notes in its blurb to the artistic homage. The snack will be familiar to many, but perhaps under a different name. This is because there are a plethora of regional variations that exist across India. In Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, the name pani puri denotes the bite-sized street food which is commonly filled with boiled chickpeas, a white pea mixture, and sprouts dipped in tangy and spicy water (pani). In the northern Indian states of Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and New Delhi, the potato and chickpea-filled delight is known as gol gappe or gol gappa, and is soaked in lemony-spiced jaljeera water. In West Bengal and parts of Bihar and Jharkhand, they call the treats puchkas or fuchkas, using tamarind pulp as their key ingredient. In a nutshell – or a delicate, fried puri shell, if you’d prefer – these beloved snacks take many iterations but all have one thing in common: they should be eaten quickly to avoid sogginess or leaking. Still, given how tasty they are, it’s hardly a tall order to make sure you devour them in one go. Have your say in our news democracy. Florence Pugh makes return to Paris Fashion Week in transparent dress following last year’s uproar
Florence Pugh has arrived at Paris Fashion Week on Wednesday (5 July) following last year’s uproar over her transparent dress. In 2022, she addressed the “vulgar” backlash she received over her decision to wear a transparent fushia pink Valentino gown to the fashion house’s couture show. At the time, Pugh responded to “commentary” about her outfit in an Instagram post after “so many of you wanted to aggressively let me know how disappointed you were by my ‘tiny t***’, or how I should be embarrassed by being so ‘flat chested’”. “Not a wink of me was nervous” to wear the gown “before, during or even now after” being body-shamed,” Pugh said. She added: “What’s been interesting to watch and witness is just how easy it is for men to totally destroy a woman’s body, publicly, proudly, for everyone to see.” The English actor, who is best known for starring opposite Harry Styles in the 2022 film Don’t Worry Darling, was not put down by last year’s criticism and returned to Valentino’s AW24 show this week on Wednesday in a transparent lilac tulle dress, featuring a plunging neckline, low back and bow detail. Pugh completed the looked with huge black platform heels, a matching handbag and a bright pink buzz cut. Fans have been praising Pugh for returning to the show wearing a bold look in light of the body-shaming she faced last year. “Her confidence is just so alluring,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “She’s just doing what others are too scared to do and I’m here for it,” added another, as one wrote: “SHE IS SOOOO BEAUTIFUL” “I think she looks good, haters gonna hate,” wrote another. Last year, celebrities rallied around Pugh, defending her against critics. The Interstellar actor Jessica Chastain spoke out in support of Pugh at the time, writing: “Why is it so threatening for some men to realise that women can love our bodies without your permission? “We don’t belong to you,” the 46-year-old Oscar winner added. FormerBridgerton star Regé-Jean Page also reacted to the uproar at the time, urging men to “do your bit” in the face of misogyny. “Read the caption. Take a look at yourself fellas [sic],” Page wrote, sharing Pugh’s post on his Instagram Story. “Then take a look at your mates and step up when it’s time to step up. When the boys are out of line, have a word,” he continued. “The weird thing about misogyny is men actually listen to other men, so do your bit, cos the next few years in particular are gonna be a really good time to listen, and take some responsibility, for everyone’s sake.” Read More Woman exits plane after tirade about passenger who is ‘not real’: ‘Final Destination vibes’ Who is in the Royal Box on the fourth day of Wimbledon?
