Here's what Charlie Morton said to Pete Alonso after HBP

Charlie Morton hit Pete Alonso in the first inning on Wednesday, and talked with him after the game. Here's what was said.

After New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso used his words after hitting a home run against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, one might assume there is animosity between him and his division rivals. It sure looked that way as he chirped the Braves from his own dugout.

Then, tensions were even more palpable when Alonso was hit by a pitch in his first plate appearance on Wednesday. Alonso took a 97 MPH fastball to the wrist from Charlie Morton in the first inning, leaving fans to wonder if it might have been on purpose.

Alonso left the game there and didn't return.

While some spiciness between two talented teams in the same division might be fun, no one ever wants to see a player hurt, especially a star like Alonso who has been slugging like crazy this season. He is top-10 in SLG at .546.

Here's what Charlie Morton had to say to Pete Alonso after the game

Though the timing certainly left room for imagination ro run wild, the HBP was an accident, nothing more, nothing less. Morton would be ill-advised to intentionally send a pitch up and in at Alonso in the first inning of a game the Braves absolutely want to win.

Alonso said that Morton reached out to him after the game to apologize for the pitch, emphasizing it wasn't intentional.

"A, Chucky's a good guy, and B, the situation didn't call for [an intentional HBP either]," Alonso added.

A nice, sportsman gesture from the Braves pitcher.

Pete Alonso injury update

Alonso got X-rays after the game, and Mets manager Buck Showalter said that the X-ray looked good, but that he'll get a CT scan on Thursday.

Showalter said he expected he'll be swelled and sore on Thursday, reducing optimism that he'll play Thursday. Showalter didn't say one way or the other whether he expects him to play or not.
