LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: HGTV is all set to take their search beyond a rundown shack for the 'Ugliest House in America' Season 4. In the latest season, comedian Retta was invited into some of the wildest, most unimaginably ugly homes, which she said made her jaw drop to the ground.

However, Retta will team up with designer Alison Victoria to give a stunning makeover to three properties, a shiny dome with a gross past, a former museum with a thing for skeletons and a castle held together with styrofoam. However, ahead of the premiere, Retta revealed how she chooses the 'Ugliest House in America' which get featured on the HGTV show.

How are homes selected for 'Ugliest Home in America'?

Viewers often wonder how Retta selects the ugliest home for the grand makeover and if they can nominate homes to be featured on the HGTV show. The answer is yes, but fans first have to send videos and photos of the 'ugly' house they have in mind, be it their own or someone else's to HGTV and clearly show what it is that makes the home ugly. After going through all the applications and videos, the HGTV committee shortlists the ugliest houses based on these photos and videos. Then Retta gets to visit all the shortlisted homes. Retta goes cross-country to tour properties nominated by homeowners who believe their place is one of the worst abodes in the country. And then, they get the desired renovation by designer Allison Victoria. Retta revealed that she toured 15 horrendous homes in America and there were so many stunningly bad design choices that picking the 'finalists' to feature on the show was a task.

Is 'Ugliest House in America' real?

Most reality shows are staged and the locations need to be arranged in a certain way as the specific shots need to be covered in order to convey a sense of narrative for the viewers. Additionally, some show producers also fabricate situations to spice things up. However, it doesn't appear to be the case for the 'Ugliest House in America'. The HGTV show's host Retta noted that the homes that are featured on 'Ugliest House in America' are 100 per cent real. However, Retta shares her genuine reviews, and comments on wacky layouts, clashing designs and severely outdated styles to the owner of the houses.

'Ugliest House in America' Season 4 is to premiere on Monday, August 7, at 8 pm ET on HGTV.
