LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Renowned actor Sir Michael Gambon died peacefully at the age of 82 in a hospital, as confirmed by his family, after a bout of pneumonia.

Sir Michael, who received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 1999 for his contributions to the world of drama, died in Essex with his wife and son by his side.

The iconic figure in both theater and film, boasting an illustrious career spanning six decades, had earned accolades such as three Olivier Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four BAFTA Awards.

To younger generations, he was most recognizable for his portrayal of Hogwarts' headmaster Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series.

A statement issued by publicist Clair Dobbs on behalf of his wife Lady Gambon and son Fergus Gambon, said: “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon."

“Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82," the statement added.

“We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love,” it concluded.

Michael Gambon kept his relationships private

Gambon first tied the knot with Anne Miller at the age of 22, but he has always been very secretive about his personal life.

In response to one interviewer's inquiry about his wife, he humorously quipped, "What wife?" The couple used to reside in the vicinity of Gravesend, Kent, where Anne had her own workshop.

During the filming of 'Gosford Park', Gambon brought Philippa Hart onto the set and introduced her to his co-stars as his girlfriend.

When news of their affair emerged in 2002, he moved out of his marital home and acquired a bachelor pad.

In February 2007, it became public knowledge that Hart was expecting Gambon's child, and she gave birth to their son, Michael, in May 2007. On June 22, 2009, she gave birth to their second child, a boy named William, making him Gambon's third child.

In addition to his acting career, Gambon is a certified private pilot and possesses a deep passion for automobiles, which led to his participation in the BBC's Top Gear program.

During one memorable episode, Gambon took on the Suzuki Liana in a spirited race, pushing the vehicle so aggressively that it went around the final corner of his timed lap on two wheels.

In recognition of this daring feat, the last corner of the Dunsfold Park track was aptly named "The Gambon."

Michael Gambon's early career and 'Harry Potter' success

Gambon embarked on his acting journey back in 1960 and held the distinction of being one of the original members of the Royal National Theatre, sharing this honor with the legendary Laurence Olivier.

During his illustrious career, he took on the role of French detective Jules Maigret in the ITV series 'Maigret'.

Additionally, he graced the screen in the BBC series 'The Singing Detective' and portrayed the formidable crime figure Eddie Temple in the thriller 'Layer Cake' during the early 2000s.

Gambon's breakthrough into mainstream recognition came later in his career. He gained widespread popularity, especially among younger audiences, for his portrayal of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series.

Gambon assumed the role of Dumbledore from Richard Harris, who played the character in the first two films.

Gambon's portrayal of the wise and benevolent headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry made him an integral part of the beloved film franchise.

Michael Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore spanned from the third installment, 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' (2004), to the final film, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2' (2011).

His nuanced performance captured Dumbledore's wisdom, compassion, and strength, endearing him to both fans of the books and moviegoers worldwide.

Michael Gambon's final film roles

Gambon's remarkable career continued well into his later years. Some of his notable film appearances were in the latter part of his career.

These included roles in movies such as 'The King's Speech' (2010), where he played King George V, and 'Quartet' (2012), directed by Dustin Hoffman.
