BIG BEAR LAKE, CALIFORNIA: At eighty years old, Richard Moll, a character actor best known for his portrayal of a compassionate and quirky gigantic bailiff in the original 'Night Court' sitcom, has died.
Richard died at his Big Bear Lake, California, home on October 26, as publicist Jeff Sanderson confirmed in a statement to CBS News.
The cause of death was not immediately known.
On January 13, 1943, Charles Richard Moll was born in Pasadena. His father, Harry, was a lawyer, while his mother, Violet, worked as a nurse.
After completing his studies in psychology and history at the University of California, Berkeley, he worked as a ladies' hosiery salesperson at a San Francisco store and as a deputy probation officer in Alameda County after graduating in 1964.
In 1968, he moved to Los Angeles to seek a career in acting, but things weren't easy at first.
Richard, a passionate observer of birds and the natural world, had two marriages and divorces. His second spouse, Susan, was the daughter of Milton Berle's third and last spouse, Lorna Adams. His stepchildren, Cassandra and Morgan, as well as his children, Chloe and Mason, are all survivors.
Richard Moll gained fame as a voice actor for Batman's Two-Face
Apart from 'Night Court', Richard's role as Harvey Dent's voice on 'Batman: The Animated Series' may have had the most cultural impact. Up until the two-parter Two-Face, in which Harvey battled his suppressed dark side before being severely injured in a fatal accident and turning into the show's main antagonist, he provided the voice of Gotham's D.A. for a number of episodes.
In addition to reprising his part in 'The New Batman Adventures', Richard also portrayed mobster Lew Moxon in "Chill of the Night!", which is regarded as the finest episode of the television show. Richard also appeared in 'Batman: The Brave and the Bold'.
Richard Moll said no to 'Night Court' reunion
In 2013, Richard was out and about in Los Angeles when a TMZ photographer approached him and inquired about a possible cast reunion.
'Night Court' star Richard talked to TMZ about getting back together with the cast. Richard said, "I love show business." He previously stated that if a reunion was in the works, he would "run in the other direction. It's the people that I can't stand."
