'I was so hurt': Melanie Griffith regretted her multiple facial surgeries after being told she looked 'horrible'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: It has been over five decades since actress Melanie Griffith made her debut in Hollywood. The daughter of actress Tippi Hedren and advertising executive Peter Griffith, the 65-year-old earned mainstream success in the 1980s with her work in films like 'Body Double,' 'Something Wild,' and 'Working Girls,' which also earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Griffith is also known for her performances in 'Buffalo Girls,' 'Mulholland Falls,' 'Pacific Heights,' 'Milk Money,' 'Another Day in Paradise,' and 'Lolita,' among many others.

Back in 1981, Griffith appeared opposite her mother in the adventure comedy film 'Roar,' which was directed by her then-stepfather Noel Marshall. While filming, Griffith who played the role of anima keepers Madeleine and Hank's daughter, was mauled by a lion. This led to the actress undergoing facial reconstructive surgery. Over the years, Griffith went under the knife several times but later revealed that she regretted having plastic surgeries. In a 2017 interview with Porter magazine, the actress said she did not realize how much she changed while getting work done until other people pointed out the situation. Griffith also shared that the realization left her "hurt."

'The tweets I get are really nasty'

Griffith has long been open about her plastic surgery and the negative feedback she received for her altered look. "Most people are telling me I look horrible. The tweets I get are really nasty," the actress told Us Weekly in 2012. She also that the pressure placed on women about looks and beauty standards is an issue in Hollywood. During a 2002 appearance in 'Larry King Live,' Griffith said her contract with Revlon highlighted such standards by showing how was switched to the "age-defying line" when she was only 34.

"I was extremely flattered [about the line], [but] I mean, it's age-defying at 34? Shouldn't age-defying be at, like, 50 or 60?" the Golden Globe winner said at the time. In her 2017 interview for Porter magazine, Griffith opened up about how she was "hurt" from the review of her botched surgeries. "No, I didn't [realize] until people started saying, 'Oh my god, what has she done?!' I was so hurt," she explained at the time. "I went to a different doctor, and he started dissolving all of this s**t that this other woman doctor had put in. Hopefully, I look more normal now," Griffith added.

The 'Twins' star also mentioned that she eventually started focusing on fitness and health instead of unachievable beauty standards. "I have a trainer that I [work with] four times a week, and I do hot yoga," the actress told US Weekly, adding, she "work[s] out a lot."

Melanie Griffith underwent dermabrasion after skin cancer treatment

In addition to her struggles with cosmetic surgeries, Griffith also underwent surgery to remove early stages of skin cancer and had dermabrasion, a skin resurfacing procedure, following her treatment. Back in 2009, a representative said that the actress had to undergo surgery to eliminate early stages of skin cancer from her face and avoid further complications. Several media reports at the time alleged that Griffith was also left with a black eye due to the procedure.

Nearly 10 years later, the actress shared that she had dermabrasion as the final step to treat her basic cell skin cancer, which was previously removed. "Bandaged again after having dermabrasion, the final step to fix the now removed basil cell skin cancer. If any of you have it, get it fixed. If you lay in the sun, are exposed to lots of sun, be CAREFUL. Use sun screen. Get checked out by your Dermatolgist. If you don’t have one, get one, or go to your nearest clinic and ask to be tested for it. More info to come!" Griffith wrote on Instagram at the time.
