‘Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny’ Ending Explained: Does Indy come back to be with Marion? Harrison Ford bids farewell to iconic character

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Harrison Ford’s journey with Indiana Jones has finally come to an end. The 80-year-old star finally bids farewell to a character he has played for over four decades. The fifth Indian Jones film, ‘Dial of Destiny’ sees Indy fighting a Nazi once again, trying his best to retrieve a time dial with her goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) that could alter the course of history. The hunt for the dial takes Indy and Helena from New York to Morocco and Greece, and finally, Italy.

Former Nazi scientist Jurgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), who is now working for NASA, wants to use this dial of destiny made by Archimedes, a Greek mathematician, to travel back to Adolf Hitler's time. He wants to use his knowledge to rule Germany and win the second World War. However, the dial is split into two parts.

The quest for the dial brings Indy and Helena to Syracuse, where they make their way to Archimedes' tomb where they discover that the mathematician was buried wearing a modern-day watch. Voller who is shadowing Indy and Helena uses Archimedes’ clock necklace to unlock the two pieces of the dial. However, his plan fails miserably, leading to his death.

Voller wants to rule Germany

Voller is hellbent on his vision to return to the past to kill Hitler and take over. But he fails to take into consideration a big event that could alter his journey into the past. When Voller uses the Dial of Destiny to open a fissure in time and return to August 20, 1939, a continental drift sends him to the Siege of Syracuse in 212 BC. Voller is killed and Indy and Helean who jump from the plane are injured. Indy is gravely injured but meets Archimedes in the past.

Indy learned that the Dial of Destiny was always going to send them back through time to that moment as Archimedes needed help, and he’d designed the artifact to do what he thought was needed. When Indy came across Archimedes, he expressed his desire to stay with him in the past and told Helena that he doesn’t want to return to 1969. By staying back in time, Indy will create a huge time paradox that will alter many significant events. Helena informs him about these repercussions but Indy needs more than this to return to where he came from.

Indy still loves Marion

Marion and Indy have been contemplating separation as shown in the early half of the film due to the death of their son in the Vietnam War. But Indy still loves his wife. After all, she was by his side and helped him in finding the Ark of the Covenant in 1936 and the Crystal Skull of Akator in 1957. Also, Helena knew that her godfather still had something left to live for and convinced him that a return to 1969 is the only logical solution.

Towards the end, Helena calls Marion and tells her what happened in the past. Marion is moved and reunites with Indy. The duo still have feelings for each other and want to stay close, especially after losing a son. Indy and Marion reunite, deciding not to divorce. And with that, Harrison Ford bids farewell to a character he has played since 1981.
