Sadly, it has been confirmed that the submersible exploded, resulting in the loss of all five billionaires who embarked on this adventure of a lifetime. As the online community mourned the lives lost, renowned director James Cameron has faced relentless trolling for his statements about the tragedy and supposed expertise on the incident.
During a recent interview, Cameron analyzed the potential circumstances that led to the tragic implosion of the doomed Titan submersible. Upon discovering that the sub had lost both navigation and communication capabilities, he claimed he 'knew' of the disastrous outcome before the news was even confirmed. However, being on a separate vessel at the time, he remained unaware of the submarine's disappearance until June 19.
‘I’ve made 33 dives’
James Cameron, during his discussion with ABC News, disclosed that he had undertaken 33 dives to explore the remains of the Titanic. However, it was his ensuing remark that triggered substantial criticism, especially considering the tragic Titan submarine incident. “I have been down there many times. I know the wreck site very well as my friend Bob Ballard. I’ve made 33 dives, and actually calculated that I’ve spent more time on the ship (Titanic) than the captain did back in the day.
Internet users criticized the director for what they perceived as an inappropriate display of his knowledge and supposed 'expertise' at such a tragic time. A Twitter thread shared by the account Discussing Films, featuring Cameron's remarks, became a platform for users to troll him, sharing memes and mocking his comparison between the Titanic disaster and the Titan mishap as he discussed the possibility of implosion.
The trolls kept coming
During the Twitter trolling frenzy, a user saracastically indicated towards James Cameron commenting, “I’m the best human to ever live".
Others questioned his involvement in finding the missing sub saying, "Why wasn’t he the captain of oceangate", while one particularly harsh troll mocked him by mentioning, “Disagree, didn’t the captain die on the ship over 110 years ago? Checkmate James!”.
Several Twitter users criticized Cameron for flaunting his knowledge of the Titanic during a time when lives were lost. One user wrote,"This is pretty much James Cameron saying “if I were piloting a submersible to the deepest part of the ocean I would simply return to the surface safely!”.
A concerned user commented, “At what point do we stop calling it weird adventure tourism? Like I get it in the titan case, but low key james cameron is fully making movies to fund his undersea research”.
While another comment highlighted, "What is he looking for there? We know what happened to the Titanic. There were survivors, and thus many eyewitness accounts. 1,500 souls perished and that’s the burial ground/final resting place of most of them. Why can’t people like James Cameron allow the dead to rest in peace?"
