LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: John Mulaney opened up about the striking parallels between his own life and that of late actor Matthew Perry whom he has never met.

The comedian expressed a deep connection to the 'Friends' actor's addiction struggles, a theme both of them have candidly talked about, according to ET.

John Mulaney says he 'really identified' with Matthew Perry's story

Mulaney recently opened up about his substance abuse issues in his standup special, Baby J. In a recent interview with Variety, Mulaney said, "Addiction is just a disaster."

"Life is like a wobbly table at a restaurant and you pile all this s**t on it, and it gets wobblier and wobblier and more unstable. Then drugs just kick the f*****g legs out from under the table," he said.

The standup comedian read the 'Fools Rush In' actor's 2022 'Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing' and stated that he was able to relate to Perry's struggles.

"I really identified with his story. I’m thinking about him a lot," he said of the late actor.

Matthew Perry's cause of death

Perry who has openly addressed his addiction battles throughout his career died on October 28 at the age of 54. He was found unconscious in a stand-alone jacuzzi in his Los Angeles home.

Before the first responders arrived, he was pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. On October 29, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office stated that an autopsy was completed.

However, the autopsy status has been listed as "deferred" pending a toxicology report and the cause of death is yet to be disclosed.

Mulaney talked about his 2020 relapse and also the experience of becoming a father to his son Malcolm he shares with actress Olivia Munn.

"I kept asking friends, 'Do I come off like too much of an a**hole?'" Mulaney said.

"Jimmy Kimmel saw it at the Troubadour and said, 'Yes, but you have to keep it all," he added. The comedian also admitted his hesitations about sharing the darker sides of his life story with his audiences," he added.

"I’ve had bits my entire career where I think, 'Oh, this is a little dark. I don’t know if people are going to go with this,'" Mulaney said.

"For some reason, I attract an audience from 70 years old to 7, and I’m aware of how this is going to play with the great big group that I’m very lucky to have assembled," he continued. "I just knew that this vein would be interesting to people," he added.
