When we reviewed the Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi Mini Plug-in Outlet in 2020, we were impressed with the smart plug's ease of use and support for Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and IFTTT, but wished it offered energy usage reports and Apple HomeKit integration. With support for the smart home interoperability standard Matter, the Leviton Decora Smart Mini Plug-In Dimmer D23LP-2RW works with even more automation platforms, including HomeKit and SmartThings in addition to Alexa and Google, and it offers dimming capabilities for all sorts of indoor light bulbs. However, it still won’t tell you how much power it is drawing, and at $42.58 it’s pricey for a single plug, although you can get it for less if you shop around. Even so, TP-Link’s Matter-enabled Kasa KP125M is a better value, offering two plugs for around the same price, multi-platform support via Matter, and energy usage reports, remaining our Editors’ Choice winner for smart plugs.
Two Prongs for Lighting
The Decora D23LP-2RW looks like a typical smart plug until you notice that it's equipped with a two-prong outlet instead of the usual three-prong outlet you get with most similar products. That’s because this plug is designed exclusively for use with lamps and other small lighting fixtures and is not made for things like coffee makers and small kitchen appliances that use three-prong plugs. It’s a 120VAC plug that can handle lighting fixtures with LED and CFL bulbs of up to 100 watts and incandescent bulbs of up to 300 watts.
(Credit: Leviton)The plug measures 1.3 by 3.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and has an on/off button on the side along with an embedded LED that indicates its connectivity status. Around back is a two-prong plug and a Matter QR code. Under the hood is a Bluetooth radio for pairing with the app and a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi radio for connecting to your home network. The LED indicator flashes green while the plug is in setup (pairing) mode, shines solid green when connected and working properly, and blinks red when it is no longer paired.
As a Matter-enabled device, the D23LP-2RW works with numerous home automation platforms including Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. It supports Alexa, Google, and Siri voice commands and works with scores of third-party devices using IFTTT applets. It can be paired with a Leviton Decora Anywhere Dimmer Companion device for three-way multi-location lighting control. Unlike the TP-Link Kasa KP125M, the D23LP-2RW does not provide energy usage reports.
(Credit: Leviton)In addition to voice commands, you can control the plug using the My Leviton app for Android and iOS mobile devices. It appears in its own panel on the Dashboard screen, as well as on the Light screen. The panel shows its current status (On, Off) and the dimmer level. Tap the three dots to open a screen with a large dimmer slider control, On and Off buttons, a Device Settings button, and an Auto Shutoff button. The Device Settings menu lets you configure wireless settings, update the firmware, identify the device with a multi-color flashing LED, and view the Matter QR code for pairing.
Advanced settings let you enable or disable the LED indicator, configure night preferences to have your light dim to a preset level in the evening, create schedules so the light dims or turns on/off at specific times of the day or when the sun rises and sets, and have the light resume its previous settings when turned on. Here you can also set fade-on and fade-off timing rates (between 0 and 25 seconds) and configure a dimming range to prevent flicker. The Auto Shutoff button lets you set a timer to have your light automatically turn off.

The three-bar icon lets you configure and edit your account information, enable notifications, add users who can control the plug, and view help files.
Quick Installation and Flawless Performance
Installing the D23LP-2RW plug is quick and easy. Start by downloading the My Leviton app (available for Android, iOS, and the web) and creating an account, then tap Add A Device on the opening Dashboard screen. Next, select Plug-In from the list of devices > Mini Plug-In 2nd Generation. Plug the device into an outlet, verify that the LED is flashing green, and wait for the plug and the app to pair via Bluetooth. After a few seconds, you’ll be prompted to select your Wi-Fi SSID and enter your password to connect the plug to your home network. After another 30 seconds or so, the plug should successfully connect, at which point you’ll be prompted to choose an icon and give it a name.
(Credit: Leviton)To add the plug to your Apple Home, simply open the Home app, tap the plus icon > Add Accessory, and scan the Matter code on the getting started guide. Once it identifies the plug, it'll prompt you to give it a name and assign it to a room to complete the installation.
To add the plug to your Alexa account, use the virtual assistant's app to link your My Leviton account, then tap Discover to add the plug to your list of Alexa devices.
The D23LP-2RW worked flawlessly in my tests. It instantly responded to On and Off commands using the mobile app and had no trouble responding to Alexa and Siri voice commands to turn the plug on and off and to set the dimmer level. My Alexa routine to have the plug turn on when a Wyze Floodlight Pro detected a person worked perfectly, and the plug never failed to adhere to my sunrise and sunset schedules. Apple HomeKit scenes also worked as intended.
Never Forget to Turn Off the Lights
If you want to smarten up your desktop lamps and other small lighting fixtures, the Leviton Decora Smart Mini Plug-In Dimmer D23LP-2RW has you covered. It uses Matter technology to seamlessly integrate with just about every smart home platform and offers dimming capabilities with a preset brightness option, night settings, and an automatic shutoff. With support for voice control and lots of third-party integrations, it’s one of the smartest plugs out there, but at $42.58, it’s also one of the more expensive models we’ve reviewed and it won’t tell you how much power it's using. For that, you’ll want to check out our Editor’s Choice winner, the TP-Link Kasa KP125M, which offers power usage reporting, Matter support, and includes two plugs for the price of one Leviton.
