Manchester United vs Bayern Munich: Complete H2H record

Manchester United and Bayern Munich are the most successful clubs England and Germany have to offer and it's never a minor occasion when the pair clash.

Head-to-head duels between the pair were non-existent right up until the end of the 20th century but the two clubs have met numerous times since the turn of the millennium.

While it'd be pretty far-fetched to suggest there's any sort of fierce rivalry between the Red Devils and FC Hollywood, they've nonetheless engaged in some pretty significant contests over the years.

Here's a complete rundown of Man Utd's head-to-head record against Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich 2-2 Manchester United - September 1998

The first-ever meeting between these two European giants didn't arrive until 1998, when they were paired alongside Barcelona and Brondby in a fiercely contested Group D to kick off the 1998/99 Champions League campaign.

Neither side tasted victory on Matchday 1 as United were held at home by Barca, while Bayern were stunned away at Brondby. Thus, their head-to-head duel was thought to be pretty signifcant on Matchday 2, but the spoils were shared in Munich.

Dwight Yorke and Paul Scholes struck either side of a Giovane Elber brace, with the Bayern forward nodding home a crucial equaliser late on as they eventually topped the group with United, who claimed four draws in six games, edging out Barca to second.

Manchester United 2-1 Bayern Munich - May 1999

After twice battling it out in the group stage without a victor, Bayern and Man Utd met again to wrap up the 1998/99 Champions League campaign.

The two sides played out a fairly drab affair after Mario Basler gave the German giants an early lead with a smartly-taken free-kick. They looked set to hold off the Red Devils and claim their first European crown since the days of Franz Beckenbauer.

However, a flat final enjoyed the most thrilling of conclusions as the dogged Red Devils struck late from a corner via Teddy Sheringham to equalise. Despite such little time remaining on the clock, an air of inevitability surrounded Camp Nou regarding its subsequent events. Bayern were out on their feet as United won another stoppage time corner...

"And Solskjaer has won it!"

Manchester United 3-2 Bayern Munich - April 2010

A 2-1 victory for the hosts at the Allianz Arena meant it was all to play for in the second leg of their quarter-final tie during the 2009/10 Champions League.

It took United just two minutes to gain the advantage as - wait for it - Darren Gibson fired home before Nani raced the hosts into a 2-0 lead with barely six minutes played after a delightful close-range flick.

United's near-perfect first half concluded with Nani scoring his second five minutes before half-time as the Red Devils took full control of the tie. Ivica Olic, though, put a stain on the hosts' stellar opening period as he pulled one back right after Nani's second.

A tense second half ensued with United being reduced to ten men after Rafael picked up a second yellow card. Chances arrived at both ends before Arjen Robben struck the sweetest of away goals, catching his first-time volley expertly which ensured Bayern progressed into the last four.

Bayern Munich 3-1 Manchester United - April 2014

While Robben's volley four years prior was nothing short of exquisite, nobody has struck a ball with more venom than Patrice Evra did in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.

This was David Moyes' Man Utd, a pretty dire iteration of the Red Devils, but it briefly looked as if they'd advanced into the 2013/14 Champions League semi-finals at Bayern's expense when Evra rifled a shot past a helpless Manuel Neuer just before the hour.

However, the Frenchman's strike awoke a sleeping giant as Pep Guardiola's side started playing properly. Mario Mandzukic quickly restored parity and they were out of sight by the 76th minute as Thomas Muller and Robben both scored to hand Bayern a 3-1 lead on the night after the first leg at Old Trafford ended 1-1.
