Why does Harold want a prenup?

Love knows no boundaries, and for Harold, that means leaving the comforts of his home in the United States in search of his perfect match on TLC's latest dating series, 'Match Me Abroad.' In the premiere episode, viewers get to see the life of Harold who is going the extra mile to ensure he gets his affairs in order before leaving for his quest for love. He meets with an attorney to discuss the possibility of a prenuptial agreement, considering his extensive intellectual property that includes products, inventions, and processes.

"So, I have a lot of intellectual property, intellectual property for products and inventions and processes and so forth. So I wanted to know how could a premarital agreement protect me?" Harold asks the lawyer. The situation is further complicated as Harold has yet to meet his potential wife. In a confessional, Harold shares his concerns about his finances, "I want to protect my art, but also, I am an inventor, and I collect all my ideas and I put them in my books." However, this discussion with the attorney marks the first step in his journey toward finding love. The attorney is shocked to learn that Harold hasn't met his future bride yet, and he is relying on a matchmaker to help him find her. The attorney probes further, "Have you had any discussions with your fiancee about this meeting?" to which Harold responds, "I haven't met her yet." The attorney is taken aback by the revelation but wishes Harold the best of luck in his search for love.

Harold remains optimistic about his journey and is hopeful that he will return to the US with a wife. He explains, "I'm doing my due diligence; I was trying to hit all the bases in case it goes south." The lawyer agrees, "All right, well, hopefully, that doesn't happen." This situation is unique for the attorney as he confesses, "I've never encountered this particular situation where the fiancee, at least at this initial meeting, is unknown."

What are some of Harold's inventions?

Harold's journey on TLC's 'Match Me Abroad' is not just about finding love but also about protecting his assets and intellectual property. As we learned in the premiere episode, Harold is not just an artist, but he's also an inventor with a book full of detailed sketches of his creations. "This is book 10. I have nine others that are about, this big, that I filled but one page per invention," he says as he proudly shows his inventions to the lawyer. The sketches in his book showcase a variety of "fun rain inventions," including a miniature umbrella, a bubble poncho, and special bearings to slick off rain from your umbrella in a swift motion. Harold believes that his rain inventions are world-changing and could be worth "a giant windfall of several million to tens of millions of dollars." With the potential value of his intellectual property, it's no wonder that Harold is keen on protecting it.

The lawyer explains that a prenuptial agreement is a contract between an engaged couple before they get married and can be "as simple as in the event of a divorce that you guys don't divide any assets." However, Harold insists that he needs to protect his assets even before meeting his potential future wife. "I need protection because if I get married and all of a sudden I have the fortune," he explains. "She didn't really help with that, it was not earned, but if she stays with me a number of years then she's earned a good portion of my millions." It's clear that Harold has thought deeply about the implications of his future marriage and is keen on protecting his assets and intellectual property, even if it means having an uncomfortable conversation with his potential future spouse.
