MLB Trade Grades: Mets teardown continues by dealing outfielder to Brewers

The Mets dealt Mark Canha to the Brewers on the eve of the MLB trade deadline, getting a pitching prospect in return for the outfielder. Who won the trade?

The Mets don't want to call it a fire sale, but they shipped off another player ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline in hopes of strengthening the farm for future success.

New York has already traded David Robertson to the Marlins and Max Scherzer to the Rangers.

On Monday, the Brewers stepped up to grab outfielder Mark Canha in a move that looks like a win for both sides.

Mark Canha Trade Details: Mets pick up pitching prospect for outfielder

In exchange for Canha, the Brewers are sending right-handed minor leaguer Justin Jarvis to New York.

According to Bob Nightengale, the Mets are also paying Canha's salary for the rest of the season down to the league minimum. That means eating $3.5 million.

The Brewers are responsible for his $11.5 million club option for 2024 or the $2 million buyout.

MLB trade grades: Brewers add much-needed outfield help

Canha isn't going to move the needle all that much, but Milwaukee's outfield was in desperate need of help. Adding even an average outfielder to the mix is a plus. Garrett Whitlock isn't coming back from injury until September at the earliest, so something had to be done.

Last season, Canha's OPS+ was 123. He hasn't been able to maintain that mark, but an OPS+ of 102 is certainly better than the Joey Wiemer's 83 or Blake Perkins' 72 this season.

The fact that Canha can play multiple positions is plus.

And they only had to give up their No. 30 prospect to do it.

MLB trade grades: Mets turn rental into solid prospect

Jarvis started the season ranked No. 30 among Brewers prospects, per MLB.com, but Baseball American put him No. 12 in their standings.

He struggled in Triple-A this year but he has a 6-4 record and 3.33 ERA in Double-A.

A 2018 fifth-round draft pick, Jarvis is a decent get for a player the Mets were never likely to hold onto going into 2024. And Jarvis is far enough along to potentially see major league action soon enough.
