PARIS, FRANCE: The well-known Parisian wax museum Musee Grevin recently revised the wax representation of the Hollywood megastar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson due to backlash regarding the statue's complexion.
Despite these adjustments, the star's fans and followers remain unconvinced and persistently share their displeasure.
The dispute started when the museum revealed its initial wax statue of Johnson, which received criticism for its pale complexion. Johnson himself responded to the controversy on Instagram, announcing his intention to liaise with the museum for an "update" to his wax figure.
Dwayne Johnson's wax figure updated by Musee Grevin
The Musee Grevin in France presented its revised version of The Rock's wax statue following criticism from the actor's fans, and Johnson himself, over the original's unusually smooth and light complexion.
The updated version features a darker complexion and the face of 51-year-old Johnson appears less influenced by Botox. Veronique Berecz, from the PR team at Musee Grevin, explained that the discrepancies in skin tone arose from the difficulties associated with crafting a lifelike wax figure based solely on photographs, without having met the individual in person.
"We found his reaction rather friendly when addressing the fact that his figure was indeed whiter than it should have been," Berecz told Variety. "Unfortunately, we didn’t get to meet Dwayne Johnson so we used several photos — but as it turns out, pictures can be very tricky because the nuances of skin tones can differ depending on the lighting on photos."
She further said that the concept of whitewashing had no connection to the situation, clarifying it was simply an unintentional error based on the photographs they referred to. Upon witnessing the reactions on various blogs and social networks, they promptly made the necessary changes. However, Johnson’s attire still apparently resembles that of a golfer.
Fans say Dwayne Johnson's wax figure doesn't look like him
Social media platforms have been abuzz with comments and memes about the updated wax figure. Many users claim that despite the changes, the figure still doesn’t resemble Johnson accurately.
"Bros half black and Samoan this still doesn’t look like him," said a fan on X. Another user tweeted, "The way its just different lighting and angle."
"It somehow looks less like The Rock. They made him older too. He looks like he’s an actual chef now and we’ll be able to smell what he’s cooking," claimed one fan.
"Still, It doesnt look like him @TheRock," wrote another. "That's a whole different person still," someone else noted.
Some critics have even asserted that the revised figure appears less appealing than its first version. "Looks even worse lol," commented one fan.
