If you're going to cast one of Hollywood's friendliest actors in your TV show, you might as well turn him into a monster.
Paul Rudd, who plays arrogant action star, Schmackary's cookie fiend, and Death Rattle lead Ben "CoBro" Glenroy in the third season of Only Murders in the Building, has been an entertaining meta addition to the cast (basically an excuse for the show's writers and prop team to pack episodes full of Paul Rudd memorabilia and in-jokes about how he never ages).
As Oliver (Martin Short), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Charles (Steve Martin) search for Ben's murderer in the building, there's a small detail that's worthy of your time — it's not a clue per se, but just a fun detail from the production team.
SEE ALSO: The Paul Rudd Easter egg you might have missed in 'Only Murders in the Building'Episode 5 sees Oliver discovering a scrapbook hidden in the apartment of Loretta (Meryl Streep), his cast member-turned-romantic partner. The entire thing is dedicated to one Ben Glenroy. Flicking through it, Oliver sees that each page is filled with photos and clippings of articles with splashy tabloid headlines like "BEN GLENROY TAKES BEACH VACATION" and "GLENROY SPOTTED WITH MYSTERY WOMAN OUTSIDE EXCLUSIVE LOS ANGELES SUSHI SPOT!", with the ominous suggestion being that Loretta has been obsessed with Ben for a long time.
Most of the articles in the scrapbook are too small, or too fleeting, to read properly, but there is a bonus one that appears during the episode's end credits which is every bit as silly as you'd imagine.
We've transcribed it in full below:
BEN GLENROY – T-SHIRT GATE (CONTINUED)
The mega star (known for his especially firm abdomen) wore an offensive T shirt to meet the Pope — but there's more to the story!
Ben Glenroy, whose film COBRO broke box office records last year (and cemented him as both a mega action star and a creative visionary) is no stranger to controversy. He caused international uproar last year after he made comments about Dolly Parton while presenting her with a lifetime achievement award at the Nashville School for the Blind (and NO, we're not repeating what he said!)
Then there was the letter he "anonymously" sent to Queen Latifah, followed by a series of outbursts on multiple late night shows, which the star attributed to a since resolved medication imbalance. But when the A Lister met the Pope last week wearing a t shirt emblazoned with the word "MANWH*RE" millions of God fearing fans finally said "enough is enough!"
Glenroy's team claimed there was a mix-up; he was wearing the shirt under a sweater that he was never supposed to take off. But now sources close to the star say that this was all a carefully planned prank. It certainly wouldn't be out of character, with Glenroy stating multiple times that he's "beefing" with the head of the Catholic church. Why? "I never trust a Catholic who wears a yarmulke." Touche. The t shirt is the latest piece by street wear designer SKUNKS and retails $7,500. Not to shabby!
Note: The papal headwear in question is technically called a Zucchetto. The more you know!
Kudos to the Only Murders production team on that one.
Only Murders in the Building Season 3 is now streaming on Hulu, with new episodes streaming weekly.
