Patrick Mahomes loves ‘being the villain’ with Chiefs on the road

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have feasted on their AFC West rivals, especially when they are the visiting team.

He is the reigning NFL MVP and the quarterback of the defending Super Bowl champions. It has been quite the run for Patrick Mahomes, who recently lauded head coach Andy Reid (via the AP Pro Football Podcast with Rob Maaddi).

He also had some things to say during a recent interview with CBS (courtesy of Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk). He was asked if he preferred the hero or villain role when taking the field, the former at Arrowhead Stadium and the latter when the Kansas City Chiefs hit the road.

"I like to be the villain," said the six-year signal-caller. "Obviously it's cool at Arrowhead to be the hero and win the games and host the AFC Championship trophy. But it's just as fun, no offense to any of my division opponents, to go to their places and win those games. Both are great, but I like to be the villain sometimes."

Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes loves to be the villain

That certainly makes sense consider he and the team's success against their AFC West rivals. With Mahomes as the starter, Reid's team owns a combined 27-3 record vs. the Broncos (11-0), Raiders (9-1) and Chargers (7-2). In those contests, the prolific passer has thrown for 66 scores opposed to just 16 interceptions.

However, those numbers are even more impressive when the team has been on the visiting sidelines. Be it Denver, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Oakland or Las Vegas. Mahomes and the Chiefs are a combined 16-0 vs. the Broncos (6-0), Raiders (5-0) and Chargers (5-0). In those contests, the talented quarterback has thrown more than five times as many touchdown passes (37) as interceptions (7). Three of those seven picks came in this past season's victory at Denver.

In those 16 games, Mahomes has thrown 300 or more yards in eight contests and been sacked only 18 times. The Chiefs have scored at least 23 points in each of those outings. Those are pretty imposing numbers. Then again, this team has been pretty successful regardless of where they have played with the soon-to-be 28-year-old star under center.
