'Something happens over time': Katharine McPhee and David Foster open up about their differences while parenting son Rennie

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: There are moments when American singer-songwriter and actress Katharine McPhee and her husband David Foster disagree on how to raise their two-year-old son Rennie.

The 39-year-old former 'American Idol' contender and the 74-year-old music business veteran who recently re-released a Christmas record proposed different approaches to disciplining their baby.

Katharine McPhee believes 'disciplining is something that happens over time'

Katharine McPhee and her husband David Foster sound flawlessly in unison as they record songs for their recently revised album, 'Christmas Songs.'

McPhee, 39, told PEOPLE of singing along to Foster's music, "It's a pleasure." She and her husband will be performing at this week's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

When asked when they do not agree, McPhee replied that it is usually when she's driving. However, getting around town isn't the only thing that causes conflict for the pair.

Their divergent parenting beliefs and techniques are the subject of a more significant argument; they both attribute this to being from different generations.

McPhee said, "I just want to discipline in my own way. There's the more old-fashioned way of disciplining which involves time-outs and things like that."

Stating her ways of disciplining their son, McPhee continued: "My take is that you can have more mindful parenting opposed to just assuming that a two or three-year-old can have time alone to reflect on what they've done poorly."

"I think the more new way of parenting is understanding that with a child, there's only so much that they can intellectually understand," McPhee went on to say.

"Saying 'That was really bad, that was really, really bad,' gets into a shaming thing. I think disciplining is something that happens over time."

David Foster disagrees with Katharine McPhee's point of view

Foster, who is also the father of five adult children, disagreed with his wife's point of view.

Regarding their 2-year-old kid, Foster remarked, "I want to start disciplining [Rennie] and Kat's not really down with that."

"David's more results-based. He's like, 'He can't just walk by and swat people.' But he's two and a half and he's learning those things," McPhee contended.

"It's just a different approach. I think his era of parenting is different than mine," the singer-actress asserted.

McPhee asserted that even if they take different tacks when it comes to Rennie's discipline, they "don't have arguments about it."

Rennie was born in February 2021, becoming the sixth child of Foster.

Jordan Foster, 37, Erin Foster, 41, Sara Foster, 42, Amy Foster, 50, and Allison Jones Foster, 53, are the five children of the Canadian-born musician.

Foster was married four times before he married McPhee: BJ Cook (1972–1981), Rebecca Dyer (1982–1986), Linda Thompson (1991–2005), and Yolanda Hadid (2011–2017).

David Foster and Katharine McPhee's toddler son is an amazing drummer

With his drumming skills, Foster and McPhee's two-year-old son Rennie is carrying on his parents' musical legacy.

The 'Smash' actress previously uploaded a video of her 2-year-old son Rennie pounding away on a drum kit. Rennie amazes everyone by keeping the beat while playing barefoot and using headphones that block out sounds.

McPhee Foster hinted in the caption that Travis Barker, the drummer for Blink-182, might be facing some competition.

In another footage, proud father Foster, 73, posted a video of the gifted child pounding away on his drum set on Instagram in June 2023.

Wearing protective earmuffs, a cute set of red pajamas, and no shoes, Rennie plays the tom drum with skill in the video. He then uses his snare, bass, and cymbal to create a steady pace.

"PROGRESS!! 2yrs 3mon," the famous music producer and composer captioned the video.
