Sony Teases 'Project Q' Handheld Device That Can Stream PS5 Games

It’s not a true successor to the PlayStation Vita, but Sony is preparing a handheld device that’ll let you stream games from a PlayStation 5 console.

The company showed off the device during today’s PlayStation Showcase, which mainly featured upcoming games for the PS5. But at the end of the presentation, Sony gave us a peek at two new hardware products.

Project Q and PlayStation earbuds

The first is called Project Q, a handheld device that’s essentially a PS5 controller, but with a sizeable 8-inch screen in the center.

“Later this year, we will launch a dedicated device that enables you to stream any game from your PS5 console, using remote play over Wi-Fi,” said Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The company is also releasing the first-ever PlayStation earbuds, which promise to bring “next-generation audio immersion” to both the PS5 and PCs, according to Ryan. The earbuds can also connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth.

“New wireless technology will deliver lossless audio with low latency, giving you outstanding sound quality while you’re playing,” he added.

There’s no word on price or specs for either product, but Sony plans on sharing more details in the future. Still, one apparent downside is that the Project Q device can only stream games from a PS5 console, not from other cloud gaming services, such as Nvidia's GeForce Now.

At the end of the PlayStation Showcase, Sony also revealed a new Spider-Man 2 game is coming to the PS5 that’ll feature the web slinger, along with Miles Morales, taking on the villain Kraven the Hunter. It’s slated to launch this fall.
