Sony released a new beta version of the PS5 system software, and with it added support for 8TB SSDs and Dolby Atmos-enabled audio devices.
It's unlikely to be a problem for most PS5 owners, but currently Sony's console only supports M.2 SSDs up to 4TB in size. The beta system software expands that to support up to 8TB SSDs, which are available, but you'll be spending upwards of $800 to purchase one.
The support for larger drives is welcome and forward-thinking from Sony, especially when you consider Microsoft continues to limit Xbox Series X owners to just 2TB expansion cards.
For anyone who owns a TV, soundbar, or home theater system with support for Dolby Atmos surround sound technology, your PS5 will soon be able to take advantage of it. The beta system software adds support for Atmos using Sony's 3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech. Sony says it allows for "even greater levels of immersion in the audioscapes of PS5 games."
Sony also introduced a new accessibility feature that allows a second DualSense controller to be used on a single account. It means two controllers can be used as if they were a single controller for both navigation and collaborative gaming.
The other new feature worth mentioning is the ability to search for games within your own library, which will become increasingly useful as more games are purchased, and especially following PlayStation Network sales with large discounts attached to hundreds of titles.
If you don't participate in these beta releases, don't worry, Sony intends to roll out the new feature globally later this year.
