St. Louis CITY have set a new record in their impressive first Major League Soccer campaign, reaching 56 points after their 4-1 triumph over Sporting Kansas City.
St. Louis earned their 17th victory of the 2023 season when defeating Sporting KC, the most ever by a first-year club in MLS. Only FC Cincinnati, who recently secured the 2023 Supporter's Shield title after their 3-2 win over Toronto FC, have more wins than St Louis City this season with 19.
The team from the argued 'soccer capital of the United States' also stands amongst the highest scoring teams in the league with 62 goals, currently tied for most in MLS with Columbus Crew.
Joao Klauss has led the way for St Louis up front with 10 goals despite missing a huge chunk of the season (16 games) due to a quad injury. Nicholas Gioacchini also managed 10 goals to keep the team on track in 2023, while Eduard Lowen has been the creative outlet for St Louis with nine assists and six goals this term.
Veteran goalkeeper Roman Burki, who joined St Louis from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in the offseason, has played his part with eight clean sheets and 120 saves in 32 appearances.
11 of St Louis' 17 wins have come at home at CITYPARK, rendering the ground a fortress as the playoffs are set to kick-off in the next few weeks. Head coach Bradley Carnell will aim for his side to clinch the #1 seed in the Western Conference, as they have just two contests remaining in the regular season.
"You can check these boxes now, you can check a few things off the list,” City SC head coach Bradley Carnell said. "But we wanna keep on going now. We need a couple of more points to make 58 points, I believe, to make our own."
Carnell is referencing the points record set by 2022 MLS Cup champions LAFC, who amassed 57 points in their first ever campaign back in 2018.
City SC will look to make history once again when they travel to BC Place to take on Vancouver Whitecaps on October 4.
