‘The only thing that matters is family’: LeBron James dedicates season to son Bronny after cardiac arrest

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: NBA star LeBron James is dedicating this season to his son Bronny James who suffered a cardiac arrest while practising at the University of Southern California.

He also opened up about the ordeal he faced following the event while placing his family at the top. He shared that his son was recovering well and "moving and vibrant."

James Bronny collapsed while practising

On July 25, the 18-year-old suffered a collapse on the USC basketball court. He was immediately rushed to a hospital where he remained for three days under intensive care.

Medical evaluations by experts from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Mayo Clinic and the Morristown Medical Center, doctors determined "sudden cardiac arrest" was an "anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect which can and will be treated."

LeBron, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, said he was dedicating this season to his son who he shares with his wife Savannah James, along with two other children, Bryce Maximus, 16, and Zhuri Nova, eight, as per a news conference report by EOnline.

“Obviously I’m gonna dedicate this season to Bronny because of the incident that happened this summer,” LeBron said during a press conference on October 2.

He added it is the understanding that "it just puts everything into perspective."

"No matter what’s going on, in your life at that point and time, the only thing that matters is your family.”

LeBron said he was amazed by how well his son has recovered and bounced back.

He said, “You wouldn’t even know he had what he had if you saw him now."

He said his son was moving, vibrant and full of life. He said it was wonderful to see him in such a good state. "It’s just a beautiful thing to be able to have him where he is today," LeBron said.

Bronny is also doing well in school even after missing the team's first practice on September 25.

Bronny James' academics and return to court

“He’s going to class and doing extremely well in school and we’re really excited for him,” Trojans head coach Andy Enfield said. He said Bronny's grades are excellent and he is a true student-athlete.

In August, Enfield said “I think everybody is hopeful that Bronny will return to the court," adding “We just have to be patient and take it step by step."
