The twisted story of why Amber Heard gave Johnny Depp a knife engraved with Spanish phrase 'until death'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Now that Johnny Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard has renounced Hollywood to relocate to Spain, it is time to cultivate another Spanish connection with Heard. The ‘Aquaman’ actress, who is bilingual and can speak Spanish along with English, once gifted Johnny Depp a knife engraved with the phrase “hasta la muerte”, which means “until death” in Spanish, in 2012.

As it is almost one year to the multi-million dollar defamation case, now is a good time to revisit the bizarre gift Heard gave her husband in 2012, when allegedly the abuses that she would talk about later had started. Heard was asked by Depp’s lawyers during their high-profile defamation suit at the courthouse in Fairfax, Virginia the same question in May 2022, when her answer was that she didn’t expect Depp to kill her.

According to Heard, the abuses began early in their relationship in 2011 but allegedly there was a break in 2012. When the knife was shown in the courthouse, the attorney asked, “That’s the knife that you gave to the man who was abusing you?” As reported by The Independent, she replied, “I wasn’t afraid of him stabbing me,” after saying that she didn’t believe Depp would stab her.

Amber Heard thought it ‘was romantic’

During an earlier hearing, the picture of the infamous knife was shown in the court. During that time psychologist Dr Dawn Hughes was called upon by Heard’s lawyer to testify. When Depp’s lawyer Wayne Dennison asked Dr Hughes whether anyone who is “afraid for her life” would give such a weapon as a gift. To which Dr Hughes replied there was “context” and continued to explain the story, as reported by The Independent.

The psychologist continued to say, “I believe that this is the knife that has a turquoise end and this was when Mr Depp was filming 'The Lone Ranger' and he was in a turquoise phase," before adding, “She purchased him that because she thought it would be a kind gift. The phraseology is that Mr Depp told her ‘the only way out of this relationship is death’,” Dr Hughes said.

Heard, on the other hand, said during her testimony, "I had it engraved with the saying Johnny would say to me all the time, which I thought was romantic. As funny as it is to say now."

Dr Hughes further said that "it was definitely a clinical cause of concern at the time that that phraseology was used,” as Depp refused to do a prenuptial agreement because for him “the only way out of the relationship is death.”

'She'll be back when the time is right'

After losing her $1.7 million home in California, Heard has recently relocated to Spain where she changed her name to “something like'' Martha Jane Cannary who was an American explorer. As reported by Marca, an insider said, "I can reveal that Heard left Hollywood and quietly moved to Spain with her young daughter Oonagh. She is bilingual in Spanish and is happy there, raising her daughter away from all the noise," before adding, "I don't think she's in a hurry to go back to work or Hollywood, but she'll be back when the time is right, for the right project."
