Hammer faced sexual abuse and cannibalism allegations in 2021. He was accused of rape by one woman and sexual assault by multiple women.

The 'Wounds' actor vehemently denied any criminal wrongdoing. However, he admitted to treating people poorly and being "emotionally abusive," according to People.

Hammer was also accused of expressing his cannibalistic fetishes through text messages to women.

Chalamet responded to a question about the timing of Hammer's allegations coinciding with the filming of his cannibal love story 'Bones and All.'

"I mean, what were the chances that we’re developing this thing?" the actor said in a new interview with GQ.

Chalamet said that the reports showing that their film was inspired by Hammer made him determined to star in 'Bones and All.'

The reports "made me feel like: Now I’ve really got to do this. Because this is actually based on a book," said the actor.

Speaking about Hammer's row of allegations, Chalamet said, "I don’t know. These things end up getting click baited so intensely. Disorienting is a good word."

After the news of the allegations broke out, Hammer was dropped from several projects, including the TV series 'The Offer', the Broadway play 'The Minutes', and the film 'Shotgun Wedding'. He also lost his talent representation.

In May, the Los Angeles County DA's office stated Hammer would not be charged with sexual assault as there was "insufficient evidence" to charge him with a crime.

Following the abuse allegations, Hammer told Air Mail that he attempted suicide in February 2021 after many women accused him of sexual abuse.

The actor said he "walked out into the ocean and swam out as far as I could and hoped that either I drowned, or was hit by a boat, or eaten by a shark."

"Then I realised that my kids were still on shore, and that I couldn’t do that to my kids," the 'Crisis' actor added.
