LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza almost got married! The 'Black Mirror' star, 35, got candid as he revealed behind-the-scenes details from his nearly 25 years in front of the camera. However, Michael is ready for his upcoming film 'Barbie' featuring Margot Robbie as the main lead, which is set to be released on July 21.
During an interview to promote 'Barbie', Cera revealed how he almost tied the knot with Plaza more than a decade ago, all for one big joke. For the unversed, Cera and Plaza started dating after meeting on the set of 'Scott Pilgrim vs the World'. The couple stayed together for over a year before parting ways. However, Plaza once claimed that the two were still close.
'We almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married'
The comedian explained, "Well, we were driving through Vegas, and we almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married. like something where you get a certificate. I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other "my ex-husband" and "my ex-wife" at like… 20," as per Rolling Stone.
Although the wedding didn't work out, Cera has nothing but praise for Plaza. Cera admired the 'White Lotus' star, who has ventured into other aspects of the entertainment industry, and said, "She's always been so committed to everything that she does. It's not surprising to me that she's doing really well." He added, "The thing that's surprising to me is how much she's producing and putting together projects. It's amazing. Ingrid Goes West? That was so great."
However, Cera tied the knot with Nadine Cera in 2017 and Plaza got married to writer and director, Jeff Baena, in 2021.
'I definitely did not regret it!'
During the same interview, Cera also opened up about how singer Rihanna slapped him during the 2013 comedic drama 'This Is the End'. In the sequence, Cera's character smacks Rihanna's buttocks, to which she responds by slapping him across the face. Cera said, “I thought it would look a lot better if she hit me. I don’t think it took much convincing to get her to do it. I just thought it would look a lot better than a fake slap would because you can really feel it. It just looks a lot funnier!”
Rihanna allegedly consented to let Cera actually slap her behind in exchange for the ability to slap him in the face. He added, “I definitely did not regret it! I was into it."
