LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: Rex Heuermann's wife has spoken out for the first time about her husband's alleged Gilgo Beach serial killings which have left her "traumatized." On Friday, July 28, Asa Ellerup was seen outside her Massapequa Park home in Long Island along with her 26-year-old daughter Victoria.
The 59-year-old was seen clearing items from the trunk of a vehicle which was a black Chevy sedan. "If you want to take pictures, go ahead. I’m OK with it now. If you want to stand up here and wait for something. I have a lot of work to do," Ellerup told the press, reported Daily Mail.
What evidence did Ellerup see?
Though it remains unclear what evidence Ellerup has seen in connection to Heuermann's alleged crimes, she said, "The sheer depression of what I saw was enough trauma" as she previously stated she was shown some images that convinced her of her husband's serial murders he is accused of committing.
Rodney Harrison, Suffolk County Police Commissioner previously stated, "When we told the wife, she was shocked, she was embarrassed," and added, "But there was a point where we showed her certain pictures and she said, 'OK, it is what it is.' "
On July 14, Heuermann's wife and his two adult children were at home when investigators raided the property. Ellerup's lawyer stated the family had been "blindsided" by the New York-based architect's alleged role in the notorious serial murders. "You guys know this is an ongoing investigation - it is not over - and I cannot speak to you. But if your neighbors want to know if they are going to be safe from us ... you take care of the neighbors," Ellerup told the reporters on Friday.
12-day search at Heuermann's property
Heuermann bought the Long Island property in 1994 from his mother and he has been living in the home with Ellerup, daughter, and stepson. Following a 12-day search of the property and finding a large basement where they removed 297 guns, investigators had found a "tremendous amount of information," said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney.
On July 13, Heuermann was taken into custody and was charged with the deaths of young women Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello and Melissa Barthelemy. Police also anticipate charging him with the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes whose body was also discovered in 2010 on Gilgo Beach. The alleged murderer whose next court appearance is scheduled on August 1 pleaded not guilty to murdering the three women.
