LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann reportedly made a neighbor's wife uncomfortable and creeped her out by ogling her over the fence while she sunbathed during the summer months. Etienne Devilliers revealed in an interview how his wife felt uncomfortable because Rex Heuermann would persistently stare at her and attempt to engage her in conversations.
Devilliers decided to confront him and the two had an "unpleasant" exchange, according to him. "My wife would sunbathe in the backyard occasionally, but he would stand over the fence because he was a tall guy. He would constantly say - he was six-four, 250 pounds — and he would try to start conversations with her," he said, per Daily Mail.
'I threatened him to stop leering at my wife'
Devilliers continued, "My wife finally told me a few times that she was getting creeped out a bit by him. I had a conversation with him. It wasn't pleasant. It wasn't a pleasant conversation. We spoke pretty harshly, but he didn't get aggressive or anything. After that, he never did it again," Devilliers said. Apparently, Devilliers' plain talking had the desired effect on Heuermann.
"When I had that altercation with him, I basically threatened him to stop leering at my wife. He backed off. The violence thing I didn't see coming because he didn't come off violent. I mean, he was strange to look at, enormous. But he never became more violent to me or to anybody that I could tell," he said. "He was strange and odd. People would stay away from his house. I mean, they would literally cross the street because the house was such a mess," he said.
Who is Etienne Devilliers?
Etienne Devilliers is Heuermann's neighbor and has lived next door to the Heuermann family since the 1990s. He expressed that the entire neighborhood is in shock about the allegations surrounding Heuermann. Devilliers was particularly astonished to discover that Heuermann had kept over 200 weapons at his home. "I saw a group of people carrying in a box that must have weighed a ton. And he told me it was a metal door for the basement. But apparently, now the detective that came to my house, he said that it was a safe, into the wall of the basement. So he told me the door was to lock up his guns, but I had no idea."
Devilliers also expressed sympathy for Heuermann's special needs stepson, who recently got his first dog. "He is a sweet kid," he said, noting that Heuermann and his "odd ball" wife use him to do the yard work. Victoria, his adult daughter, is also a "sweet and quiet" child, Devilliers said.
