TUCSON, ARIZONA: An Arizona woman has been charged with trying to kill her US Air Force employee husband by spiking his coffee with bleach after he installed hidden cameras in their home to record her. Roby, also a father reportedly thinks his wife did it to attempt and get his death benefits. A grand jury indicted Melody Felicano on counts of first-degree attempted murder, attempting to commit aggravated assault, and poisoning food or drink.
Who is Melody Felicano Johnson?
Melody Felicano Johnson is charged with attempted first-degree homicide, aggravated assault, and adding poison to food or drink after her husband showed police video of her allegedly pouring bleach into his coffee pot. She was charged on July 18 by a state grand jury in Tucson, reports The Guardian. According to court filings, Melody Felicano was in the midst of divorcing her partner, who CNN identified as Roby Johnson. According to court filings, the couple were living together and had a child, but were divorcing.
How was she caught?
Roby's suspicions led him to purchase pool testing strips, which he dipped in his coffee pot and which revealed "high levels of chlorine." Furthermore, he installed cameras that captured images of his wife Melody adding something to the coffee maker. The report states that he carried on pretending to drink the coffee but didn't call the authorities until he returned to the Davis Monthan Air Force Base in the US in July. The husband installed other cameras at their permanent residence in the United States, including one above the coffee maker, one in the laundry room where the bleach is kept, and one that shows the path from the laundry to the coffee maker.
She was attempting to murder him 'to collect death benefits'
Roby returned to the police and presented them with his evidence after gathering all the footage. After Melody was arrested by the police at her residence, a search warrant revealed that the coffee maker smelled like bleach. The records also showed that the husband believed she was attempting to murder him "to collect death benefits." The couple and their child were still living together while going through a divorce. Melody Johnson entered a not-guilty plea during her hearing on Friday. Daily Mail mentioned that the wife is being held at the Pima County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
The mother is scheduled to show up in court on September 6. Authorities had asked for a hefty bond because she has family in the Philippines, where she purchased a home late last year. Prosecutors also claimed Melody was a flight risk. She had not made bail and was still being held at a local jail as of Sunday, reports Guardian.
