MARIETTA, GEORGIA: A mother of five was killed on a Georgia highway after she was struck by a vehicle while trying to help a crash victim.
According to the Marietta Police Department, the chain of events began on Saturday, September 23 around 12.45 am on the I-75 South when the driver of a Kia Sedona lost control of the car for reasons that remain unclear, reported People.
Multi-vehicle crash
In a press release issued following the fatal incident, the department stated, "The Sedona traveled across all lanes of travel, struck the median barrier, then traveled across all lanes of travel again and struck the right-hand guard rail."
"The Sedona, now stopped partially in the far right-hand lane of travel, was struck by multiple vehicles," the statement added.
As this took place, a black Dodge Challenger in the far right lane lost control and struck two individuals who had pulled over on the right shoulder to report the initial crash and offer assistance.
Both were shifted to a local hospital with one of them sustaining serious injuries while the other, identified as Sarah Bolt, did not survive her injuries.
According to police, the driver of the Kia Sedona was treated and released with minor injuries.
The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Unit of the department completed initial interviews and vehicle examinations. The police stated that there is "a mountain of evidence to review" and several interviews to be conducted in the case before deciding on the charges.
Sarah Bolt's husband remembers loving wife
Speaking to NBC affiliate WXIA-TV, Bolt's husband Robert recalled her stopping to save a turtle on the road on a previous occasion.
"Whatever she was doing, she was always looking out for other people, not herself," said Robert. "The idea that she would stop on a highway to help somebody that was in trouble. It's just part of who she was."
"We're going to miss her. We're all going to miss her terribly. She's just leaving a huge hole in our life," he added.
Fundraiser set up to support Sarah Bolt's children
A fundraiser was launched to support the 38-year-old woman's five children. The page described Bolt as someone who "always stood up for what she believed to be right and true."
As of Thursday morning, the fundraiser had raised over $12,000. According to WXIA-TV, Bolt welcomed her fifth child just six months ago.
