Whoopi Goldberg says Donald Trump's indictment is 'really sad' as her mood abruptly shifts on 'The View'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Former president Donald Trump’s third indictment was one of the main ‘Hot Topics’ of Wednesday’s segment on ‘The View.’ Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Sara Haines were all present on the panel to discuss this indictment, which a few of them had previously predicted, on the talk show itself.

Normally, when Goldberg moderates a segment, there’s a lot of humor when she introduces a topic, however, that wasn’t the case this time around. Goldberg tried, but her composure went from light-hearted to extremely serious in no time, which dictated the tone for the rest of the segment.

Goldberg sat on her coveted spot as she flipped her hair before she spoke, “Yesterday.” She took a dramatic pause and continued, “You-know-who received…” Goldberg chuckled along with the audience as she rest her hand on her chest to compose herself, “received his third indictment over plots to overthrow the election. Special counsel Jack Smith described the charges, here’s the clip.” ‘The View’ then plays the clip of Smith reading out all the charges against Trump. After the clip ended, Goldberg’s demeanor completely changed.

“Now, we sometimes have…we chuckle…you see us chuckling on stuff, but really this is really sad,” said Goldberg as she looked at her co-hosts for a brief moment before she continued, “This is a really sad time in this country because I don’t think anybody, even the oldest person in this room can ever remember anything like this ever happening in the United States of America.” The camera panned to Hostin and Griffin, both of whom had serious expressions on their faces. Although Hostin tried to further the discussion, Goldberg interrupted her, “Our grandfathers went to fight World War I and World War II…great grandfathers…to ensure this kind of thing did not happen here, so it's sad.”

When Sunny Hostin finally had a chance to speak as she said, “It’s the largest criminal investigation in US history.” Goldberg prompted Hostin to repeat that statement, and after she did, it wasn’t until Behar’s turn that the audience finally laughed again. Behar spoke about how she was at a party when the indictment was announced, “I had to stop drinking my margarita to see it.” Nevertheless, the rest of the segment and the co-hosts maintained the serious tone Goldberg set after the clip, in contrast to how she started the segment about Trump’s indictment.
