Why the Boston Red Sox released Matt Dermody, explained

After discovering offensive posts on his social media account from 2021, the Boston Red Sox have released pitcher Matt Dermody.

Boston Red Sox executive Chaim Bloom expressed regret regarding his decision to call up Matt Dermody in the first place for a spot start after the team (and Red Sox fans, mind you) discovered offensive and homophobic social media posts from 2021 and prior.

"We pride ourselves on doing the right due diligence so that we can have the right conversations around these things. We realized as this was unfolding [after the call-up] that a process that is normally pretty robust missed some things," Bloom told Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. "There were other concerning things on social media. We usually don't miss these types of things. In this case, we did."

MassLive reported that Bloom spoke to Dermody about the posts, but whatever was said during those conversations remains private knowledge.

Just days later, Boston opted to part ways with Dermody. His homophobic views appear to have played a major role in that choice.

Red Sox release pitcher Matt Dermody

On Friday, Boston decided to release Matt Dermody from his contract.

This was a rather predictable result given the public outcry about the Red Sox decision to call up Dermody in the first place.

Just a few days ago, Chaim Bloom revealed that the team was doing its due diligence regarding the posts, including a team investigation.

"We're getting our arms around what the right steps are with respect to the new info, or at least the info that's new to us," Bloom said, per MassLive. "That's obviously a process that we'll need to go through to figure out the best way to address it and take it into account. We certainly take it very seriously."

The end result of that internal investigation was Dermody's release from the team. Baseball is for everyone.
