GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS: Gigi Hadid has been arrested during her vacation in the Cayman Islands. On July 10, customs officers at the airport scanned the luggage carried by the model and her friend Leah Nicole McCarthy.
A thorough scan conducted after their arrival at the airport led the authorities to discover "utensils used for the consumption of ganja" and marijuana. Hadid, 28, and McCarthy, 29, were at the Owen Roberts International Airport when they were caught, according to Page Six.
Why was Gigi Hadid arrested?
The duo was taken into custody on suspicion of the importation of utensils used for the consumption of ganja and the importation of ganja. Hadid and McCarthy were released on bail after they were processed at the Prisoner Detention Center. On July 12, both women pleaded guilty during their appearance in Summary Court. They avoided a recorded conviction and were both fined $1,000.
Hadid legally purchased drugs for personal use
Talking to E! News on Tuesday, July 18, Hadid's representative stated, "Gigi was traveling with marijuana purchased legally in NYC with a medical license." The representative went on to add that "It has also been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains clear, and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island."
The supermodel appeared to enjoy her vacation even though she landed in trouble as she spend her time at the Prisoners Detention Center before her tropical getaway. Hadid took to Instagram to share a carousel of images of her wearing a bikini and showing off a hip tattoo of a dragon.
Apparently, there have been no previous instances of Hadid being caught for drug use. However, the model was once speculated that she might be using weed after she was seen walking with a weed pendant. In 2016, she was part of the launch of cannabis jewelry attended by celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Kendall Jenner. The motive behind the event held in Beverly Hills was to encourage an open dialogue about marijuana.
Hadid's legal troubles in the past
In 2019, Hadid was sued by a company named Xclusive. The lawsuit was filed after the model posted her image without their formal permission. The 'Next in Fashion' co-host was criticized online after a clip of her imitating Buddha and making a slanteyes face went viral in 2017, the year she did not attend the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. However, it remains unclear whether the viral video was the reason behind her absence from the show.
