Jose Trevino is out for the season, leaving the Yankees down to one active catcher.
2-8 in their last 10 and last place in the AL East, the very last thing the New York Yankees needed to hear ahead of the All-Star break was that any player who makes meaningful regular contributions to the team would be out for an extended stint.
Well, on the heels of Josh Donaldson hitting the 60-day IL, Jose Trevino is now out for the year. Trevino needs season-ending wrist surgery.
Bryan Hoch reported that Trevino told the media he was trying to play for the pain, but that a wrist injury has gotten bad enough that it's just not doable. He's turning his sights and aiming to get himself back for the start of next season.

All year, it seems the Yankees have had to plug holes in their boat due to injuries, and they've done a not-so-good job of it up to this point. When Aaron Judge went out with a toe injury, the bats went completely cold.
Trevino was among those who just haven't been offensively present this season. His .570 OPS this year is the worst of his career, excluding his rookie season. That said, the Yankees will miss his presence as the backstop. He has the third-best catcher framing runs in MLB this season.
That leaves the Yankees with just Kyle Higashioka at catcher, and could certainly put them in the market to try to acquire one in a trade.
Interestingly, Austin Wells was promoted to the AAA Rail Riders minutes after the Trevino news. The Yankees could be grooming him for some call-ups on days that Higashioka needs rest, perhaps, in the interim between finding a suitable big-league replacement for him to close out the year.
It seems as though things are coming apart at the seams for the Bronx Bombers in July. The nails aren't all the way in the coffin, but boy, are they getting there.
