Advertisers ‘won’t take risk’ of returning to X after Elon Musk’s expletive-filled rant
Advertisers are refusing to return to X – formerly Twitter – after the platform’s owner Elon Musk told them to “go f*** yourselves” if they try to pull their marketing from the microblogging site. After Mr Musk was accused of antisemitism last month, a number of the world’s biggest companies and X’s biggest advertisers, including Apple and IBM, pulled their marketing from the platform. While the Tesla chief initially said he was “sorry” and denied any suggestion he was antisemitic, he later added that advertisers who withdrew their marketing from X because of his tweet should “go f*** yourselves”. “If someone is going to try to blackmail me with advertising, blackmail me with money? Go f*** yourself. Go f*** yourself. Is that clear? I hope it is,” Mr Musk said at the New York Times’ Dealbook Summit. “The whole world will know that those advertisers killed the company and we’ll document it in great detail,” he added. Now, a number of marketing agencies say the brands they represent are firmly against returning to advertising on X. “Thank you Elon Musk, for making it very clear how seriously you take advertisers concerns... Advertisers, judge for yourselves if this is a man who you can do business with,” Lou Paskalis, the founder and chief of the marketing consultancy AJL Advisory, posted on X. “There is no advertising value that would offset the reputational risk of going back on the platform,” Mr Paskalis told NYT. Advertisers are unlikely to step in to support X, said Ruben Schreurs, the chief strategy officer at marketing firm Ebiquity. The row began last month after Mr Musk endorsed a post claiming that Jewish people “have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them” as the “actual truth”. In response, a number of top companies, including Apple, Disney and Coca Cola, have since removed paid ads from X – moves that could slash the company’s revenue by millions of dollars. Watchdog Media Matters also published a report alleging that ads on X were being placed next to posts supporing Nazism, in response to which the social media company filed a defamation claim against the group. Mr Musk’s rank at the Dealbook Summit came come on Wednesday. “I will certainly not pander,” the multibillionaire said. He even took a direct jab at Disney chief Bob Iger who had earlier explained why the entertainment company had pulled advertising from X. Just hours after Mr Musk’s expletive-laden comment on Wednesday, X chief Linda Yaccarino attempted to soften the damage, sharing the owner’s apology on the platform and appealing to advertisers to return. “Here’s my perspective when it comes to advertising: X is standing at a unique and amazing intersection of Free Speech and Main Street — and the X community is powerful and here to welcome you,” Ms Yaccarino said. “Businesses are simply full of people, and people like to be treated well, respected and dealt with with dignity,” Steve Boehler, founder of marketing management consultancy Mercer Island Group, told NYT. F1 Drive reveal bespoke karts with ‘DRS’ for Tottenham Hotspur Stadium track
F1 Drive, the new in-stadium karting facility at the 60,000-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, have unveiled their bespoke karts ahead of the grand opening next year. The new state-of-the-art facility below the South Stand at Tottenham is the epicentre for a 15-year strategic partnership between the club and Formula 1. Now, F1 Drive have revealed several features on the karts to “create the most authentic F1 driving experience for drivers of all ages and ability levels.” These include a simulated “DRS” button on the steering wheel, allowing a kart to pick up more speed when following close behind a kart in front – just like in Formula 1. Karts will also feature a “boost” button which will deliver additional power for short bursts of time. Karts will also have immersive audio with sound effects taken from the cars of Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, as well as commentary and tips from David Croft and Naomi Schiff. Steering wheels will have an 18cm LED display, providing real-time data such as lap times and flags to drivers, while the timing screens will match official F1 broadcast graphics. There will also be separate tracks for adults and juniors and the offering of dual karts to cater for accessibility requirements. F1 director of commercial partnerships Jonny Haworth said: “We wanted to create a karting experience that truly captures the feeling and atmosphere of Formula 1 and offers an accessible entry point to our sport for as many people as possible and F1 Drive-London is going to deliver on this vision and more.” The karts will have four different liveries and come in two sizes, with modifications possible depending on age and skill level. “Whether you are just starting out on your motorsport journey with your eyes set on the F1 Grid or are looking for a great day out with family and friends, F1 Drive-London can deliver an authentic F1 experience for all,” Haworth added. “I am excited to see the karts launch and track testing begin, and I can’t wait to see our fans hitting the track in the new year.” Tottenham Hotspur chief commercial officer added: “We can’t wait to welcome visitors to the world’s first Formula 1® karting facility here in Tottenham. “It will be another attraction at our world-class stadium and will act as an innovative gateway into motorsport for new fans looking to discover the thrill of Formula 1®, while giving the most passionate race fans a truly first-of-its-kind experience.” While an official opening date has not yet been released, the facility is expected to open in early 2024. The facility is expected to host future national karting championship races, having been accredited by the National Karting Association. A driver academy programme will also be launched. As well as NFL matches, boxing fights and music concerts, the karting track is another attraction to grace the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which includes the ‘Dare Skywalk’ at the top of the stadium. Jeff Stelling will return to screens in a new presenting role as host of Prime Video’s Every Game Every Goal show, the on-demand streaming service has announced. Stelling, who stood down as anchor of Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday show in May after almost 30 years in the role, has joined Prime Video’s broadcast team for 20 live and exclusive Premier League matches in December. Former Football Focus and BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker, 45, will also host some of Prime Video’s new shows, which will exclusively cover two rounds of Premier League fixtures. Prime Video said Every Game Every Goal on December 6 will show “all the goals and key moments from every game as soon as they go in across all six of the evening’s fixtures, including Sheffield United v Liverpool, Aston Villa v Manchester City and Manchester United v Chelsea. “In addition, Dan Walker will make his presenting debut on live Premier League football for the very first time across a number of Prime Video matches in December, including Wolves v Burnley, Spurs v West Ham and Burnley v Liverpool.” Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer and Patrice Evra will return to Prime Video’s coverage as pundits alongside Michael Owen, Eni Aluko, Roberto Martinez, Jermain Defoe and Stuart Pearce. The show’s presenting and commentary team will also see the return of Gabby Logan, Ally McCoist, Jon Champion, Clive Tyldesley, Robyn Cowen, Jim Rosenthal and Guy Mowbray, Prime Video said.
