PASADENA, CALIFORNIA: Serial record-breaker David Rush knocked it out of the park with 'America's Got Talent' judge Howie Mandel, but the rest of the judges weren't thrilled. On the June 13 episode, host Terry enthusiastically welcomed David, who has an incredible number of records to his name. The Idaho native previously appeared on the hit show three years ago, when he and Terry competed to see who could wear and tear the most T-shirts in one minute. David won the title with a score of 29. This time, David invited comedian Howie Mandel to join him on stage to assist him in breaking yet another record.
Howie's dislike for germs motivated their effort at the most alternative fist bumps in 30 seconds. Because the self-proclaimed germaphobe would prefer to offer someone a fist bump than a handshake, this record attempt was perfectly up his alley. David first set this record in January of this year, when he completed 273 fist bumps with Joey Hannon.
When David took the stage, he told the judges Howie, Simon, Heidi, and Sofia Vergara that he'd already broken over 250 Guinness World Records. When asked if he sets records for a living, David replied, "I worked in product management at a technology company, but this year, I just quit my job in tech because I want to be on stage to entertain and inspire."
Despite David's strong qualifications, Simon's expression suggested he was opposed to this new professional route. The audience, on the other hand, was solidly on his side, applauding him when he revealed his plans to break another record, and becoming even more enthralled when they learned Howie would be participating. David noted that while he received several yeses from the judges the last time, Howie had expressed a desire to see something "more exciting." Despite egging him on, Howie looked hesitant to join David on stage at first.
"I thought, 'What is Howie good at?'" remarked the record holder. "He is good at fist bumps'."
"I have a fear of germs," Howie said. "I don't want to be touched."
After some encouragement from the audience, Howie finally got up and made his way to the platform, where he was joined by Guinness World Records Adjudicator Michael Empric.
While David stated that he had been training for months, Howie quipped that he had been planning for the occasion for years. They began their formal effort after a brief run-through of their method. Howie raised his fists in front of David, who banged them with his own fists as quickly as he could. The judges who stayed seated were underwhelmed by the record attempt, and each hit their buzzers. After the timer expired, Michael indicated that he needed to go backstage and analyze the video to acquire the official count.
"I don't think they've made it in time," Heidi replied skeptically, while Howie shouted, "I can't feel my hands."
Michael returned to the stage after seeing a slowed-down version of the clip and painstakingly counting each fist bump to reveal they had a total of 380. Howie was overjoyed, exclaiming, "I broke a record!"
Unfortunately for David, Howie's fellow judges were not as enthusiastic and declined to advance him to the next round. Howie returned to his station to cast David's lone yes vote before dipping his hands into ice buckets.
