But you won't catch the Harry Potter actor on those programmes as the famously outspoken Margolyes explains why she has knocked back these opportunities. During an appearance as a guest on Waitrose’s Dish podcast to promote her new memoir Oh Miriam: Stories from an Extraordinary Life, the 82-year-old admitted she agreed to the book because "they offered me a lot of money." "That’s true, that’s absolutely true,” she said. “When you’re old and you know that your earning potential is diminishing, you’ve got to get the money while you can.” Margolyes added: "I won’t do that, what do you call it? The dancing thing..." She was referring to BBC's popular dance show Strictly Come Dancing, and was asked by co-presenter Angela Hartnett if she's ever been asked to join the lineup. "Yeah, they must have been f***ing nuts," Margolyes replied and also revealed that she had been offered to go on I'm a Celebrity as well but similarly turned it down. “And they asked me to go in the jungle,” she said, causing co-host Nick Grimshaw to ask: “Was that a hard no?” “I’ve got class, love,” Margolyes said. “I’m not doing that.” It's not the first time Margolyes has said she's declined to go into the Australian jungle, as she shared her candid views on The Graham Norton Show. “Are you kidding? I’m not a whore!" she replied bluntly when asked by Norton if she's considered ever going on the ITV show. While Margolyes may not go on these shows, she has made iconic appearances on daytime shows such as This Morning. Over a dozen climate activists were arrested in Berlin after they sprayed orange paint onto the iconic Brandenburg Gate amid worldwide protests held over the weekend demanding governments put a stop to burning planet-heating fossil fuels. Members of the Last Generation group used fire extinguishers filled with paint to spray all six columns of the popular landmark in Germany’s capital on Sunday. Police cordoned off the area surrounding Brandenburg Gate and confirmed they detained 14 activists affiliated with the Last Generation. The group said it wants Germany to stop using all fossil fuels by 2030 and take short-term measures, including imposing a general speed limit of 100km/h on highways to cut emissions more quickly. “The protest makes it clear: It is time for a political change. Away from fossil fuels – towards fairness,” the group said in a statement. Berlin mayor Kai Wegner condemned the group’s actions, saying their tactics go beyond legitimate forms of protest. “With these actions, this group is not only damaging the historic Brandenburg Gate, but also our free discourse about the important issues of our time and future,” he told German news agency DPA. Arrests also took place in Sweden where police said they detained 17 people suspected of sabotage after climate activists entered Stockholm’s Bromma airport, which operates mainly domestic routes, and sprayed red paint on one aircraft, police told Swedish news agency TT. An ambulance flight was forced to land at Stockholm’s main international Arlanda airport instead of Bromma due to the action, according to Swedish airport authorities. The climate activists announced later that the action was part of a global campaign calling for a ban on private jets. These demonstrations were among hundreds of events taking place worldwide this weekend ahead of this year’s UN General Assembly meeting. Photos and videos on social media showed thousands gathering in dozens of cities across Europe, the US, India, Africa, Australia and South America. People held banners demanding stronger action from governments against heat-trapping carbon pollution responsible for the climate crisis. Burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas is scientifically proven to be responsible for the majority of carbon pollution that is heating up the world and fuelling more extreme weather and disasters. There is an increased demand to end reliance on fossil fuel for energy and continued subsidies given to oil and gas, especially ahead of the upcoming UN sessions and climate talks in November. Tens of thousands of people also gathered in New York and across the US on Sunday. The March to End Fossil Fuels featured politicians such as representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and actors Susan Sarandon, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton, Kyra Sedgewick and Kevin Bacon. In one strike in Quezon City in the Philippines, activists lay in front of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in protest and held signs demanding fossil fuels be phased out. The protests were driven by several mostly youth-led, local and global climate groups and organisations, including Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future movement. Marina Diamandis, known under her stage name Marina and the Diamonds, has revealed that she was recently diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. The condition, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), resulted in symptoms such as “deep fatigue, numbness, tingling, low appetite, brain fog, rashes, insomnia and a feeling of being ‘poisoned’ for so long”, the 37-year-old Welsh singer wrote in an Instagram update. Diamandis shared that she was only diagnosed with ME after “seven years of health issues”, adding that “it’s been hard to remember what healthy feels like”. “My baseline energy has been at 50 to 60 per cent for a long time,” she continued in her post. “Aside from a few periods of remission, the last seven years have consisted of relying on adrenaline and willpower to push me through each day. “Recovery started two months ago after an unusually bad flare-up that involved shooting pains and burning sensations all over my hands, legs and back,” Diamandis revealed. “After seeing countless doctors, I started working with a functional medicine practitioner to find the root cause of the symptoms.” Functional medicine is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on identifying and treating the root cause of a disease. It falls outside of mainstream healthcare and is not offered by the NHS – although the NHS has recommended the use of some alternative medicines like acupressure and manual therapy for a limited number of circumstances. In her post, Diamandis claimed that her symptoms “are a result of a hypersensitive nervous system” that developed in response to “chronic stress”. “My body has felt stuck in ‘fight or flight’ mode and there were many warning signs it gave me before the worst symptoms set in,” she wrote. Amid her treatment, which she claimed helps to “retrain the nervous system to regulate itself again”, the “Primadonna” singer added that she is “feeling better today than I have in a long time”. “My energy levels are around 65 to 70 per cent most days and the dips I have are shorter,” she said. “Healing is demanding a lot of my energy and attention right now, but the better I feel, the sooner I can get back to my creative life again. I worked yesterday for the first time in a while yesterday and it felt so good.” Diamandis also said that living with ME has given her a “deeper empathy for the millions of people who live silently with chronic illness”. “It’s hard to maintain optimism when the world feels like it’s moving on without you, but hope always exists. Answers always exist,” she said. “The body wants to heal – and what I’ve learned is that you have to work with it, not against it.” ME is a long-term condition with a wide range of symptoms, but the most common one is extreme tiredness. It can affect anyone, including children, but tends to develop between a person’s mid-twenties and mid-forties. An estimated 250,000 people in the UK suffer from ME, with around 17 million sufferers around the world. It is more common in women. According to the NHS, there is no cure for ME. Treatments that may help sufferers manage the condition include cognitive behavioural therapy, energy management and medicine to control symptoms such as pain and sleeping problems. Diamandis released her most recent studio album Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land in June 2021. She embarked on a world tour last year to promote the record.
