Nigel Farage squirms over expenses claims in awkward resurfaced clip
Nigel Farage is, unfortunately, being spoken about more than ever as he entered the jungle for I'm A Celebrity... Now, an old clip has resurfaced of the former MEP being asked about his expenses where he appears to get extremely uncomfortable. The clip, from a 2014 episode of Have I Got News for You, starts with Farage saying: "I think it's absolutely disgusting, all these elected politicians using all these expenses to better themselves, it's disgraceful." Then one of the show's panelists, Ian Hislop replies: "It is absolutely disgraceful Mr. Kettle." Stephen Mangan, the host of the episode then reads aloud the following quote from Farage: "What we've seen is a Prime Minister who clearly is totally disconnected with how the voters in Britain feel about MPs' expenses." Mangan then adds: "The same Nigel Farage who in 2009 revealed that as an MEP he'd claimed in expenses £2 million of taxpayers' money." Visibly uncomfortable, Farage tries to worm his way out of scrutiny saying, "and who was it that bought up the issue of £2 million and me and taxpayer's money? Denis MacShane." MacShane is a former MP and was convicted in 2013 for false accounting in regards to expenses-claims. "Yeah he's in jail, but you're not," Hislop then pointed out to Farage. Mangan then continues: "As a tax-funded MEP Nigel Farage is an equal opportunities employer, some of our money has gone to his wife, and some to his mistress." Farage's appearance on ITV's I'm A Celebrity... has led for calls to boycott the show's platforming of him, especially once viewers learnt that he had been paid £1.5 million to appear in the jungle. Ukraine-Russia war - live: Putin turns to new weapon for winter attacks as bombing of Avdiivka continues
The Russian Army has used new, longer-range drones for the first time in an attack against Ukraine near Kyiv, reports suggest. The weapon, which is harder to detect than the Iranian-made Shahed drone, may be part of Vladimir Putin’s strategy to expand Russia’s arsenal as harsher winter weather approaches, the Institute for the Study of War said. It comes as the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, Donetsk, faced heavy shelling overnight as Russia continues with its offensive push into the region. “The enemy dropped about 40 guided aerial bombs in two nights. But the number of ground assaults has been reduced, half of what it was yesterday and the day before,” Oleksandr Shtupun, spokesperson for Ukraine’s southern group of forces, said. Mr Shtupun added that Russia had suffered about 2,400 casualties in the last five days during its campaing in the Donetsk region. Meanwhile, Ukraine launched an “underwater sabotage” attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet near Sevastopol, Crimea, on Tuesday, according to Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-installed governor of the region. Authorities investigate El Salvador stadium crush with at least nine people dead
El Salvador’s National Civil Police have launched a criminal investigation after at least nine people died in a football stadium crush in San Salvador. Dozens more fans were injured during Saturday’s incident at the Primera Division play-off quarter-final second leg between Alianza and FAS at the Cuscatlan Stadium in the country’s capital. The match was suspended and the National Civil Police confirmed in a preliminary report posted on Twitter that nine people – seven men and two women – had died. National Civil Police general commissioner Mauricio Arriaza Chicas said the police would work alongside the Republic’s attorney general’s office to hold those responsible for the disaster to account. Arriaza Chicas said on Twitter: “We regret this incident in which there are deaths. As a police institution we announce that together with the @FGR_SV we are going to get down to the last details of a criminal investigation into tonight’s incident.” Attorney general Rodolfo Delgado tweeted: “What has happened this day at the Cuscatlan Stadium is a tragedy for everyone. My condolences to the Salvadoran fans. @FGR_SV and @PNCSV they are executing the necessary procedures to deduce responsibilities.” El Salvador president Nayib Bukele promised that an “exhaustive investigation” would be conducted into what happened at the stadium. He added on Twitter: “Everyone will be investigated: teams, directors, stadium, ticket office, league, federation, etc… “Whoever the culprits are, they will not go unpunished.” Video footage of the match on YouTube shows the game being suspended after panic in one of the stands and the injured are later seen being carried away by emergency services on stretchers. Francisco Alabi, the minister of health, said on Twitter in the hours after the incident: “At the moment, as an integrated health system, we are caring for around 90 people after what happened at the stadium. “The patients are both women and men, including minors, and who mostly have been treated for multiple injuries. “The majority of them are in a stable condition and at the moment we have had no reports of deaths from hospitals.” The Salvadoran Soccer Federation said that all national level football matches on Sunday would be suspended.
