What caused the mysterious 'energy wave' at Lana Del Rey's concert?
What caused the mysterious 'energy wave' at Lana Del Rey's concert?
An apparent phenomenon which occurred at a recent Lana Del Rey concert has left conspiracy theorists chomping at the bit. Rey’s performance took place at the Foro Sol arena in Mexico City on August 15, but it wasn’t until the weekend that footage of the jaw-dropping occurrence exploded across social media. Recordings of the incident show swathes of the crowd suddenly toppling to the ground after being hit by what viewers called a “mysterious energy wave”. The bizarre sweep was filmed from numerous angles and, indeed, looks like a dramatic full-body Mexican wave involving hundreds of people. X/Twitter users were quick to demand explanations for the strange happening and, inevitably, the responses came in thick and fast. “Someone's TESTING something without informed consent,” one theorist suggested. “Probably crowd control device.” “Evil spirits and demonic energy exists,” offered another ominously. “I’ve seen Holy Spirit do this, as strange as this will sound to most,” wrote a third, who describes himself as a “Jesus Person”. However, others were quick to shrug it off as just an example of the so-called “domino effect”. This was explained by crowd science expert Keith Still, who told The Messenger: “It’s called a progressive crowd collapse, where the momentum of one person knocking into another, increases significantly. “I think the phrase ‘domino effect’ is quite appropriate,” he added. And yet, scores of viewers remained unconvinced by this idea. “Progressive Crowd Falls do happen BUT NOT LIKE THIS,” responded one. “Anyone who’s been to a big show can tell the difference,” they added. “[One] big difference in my mind: when the progressive crowd thing happens it’s usually stopped when smaller people bump into the bigger people. “This though, this looks like everyone was pushed nearly simultaneously. That doesn’t happen, like ever.” Another agreed, saying: “I’ve been to hundreds of gigs before, never seen this.” Meanwhile, most people accepted the logical explanation. “Some girl was interviewed and said a person up near the front was crawling on the ground looking for something, caused a few people right above them to fall backwards into the tightly packed crowd causing a domino effect,” wrote one. And others joked that the crowd had simply been bowled over by the power of Rey’s voice. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Elon Musk roasted by actor for 'defects' in Amber Heard's cosplay costume
Elon Musk roasted by actor for 'defects' in Amber Heard's cosplay costume
Lucy Pohl, the voice actor behind Overwatch 2’s character Mercy, has roundly mocked Elon Musk for the “defects” in the Mercy cosplay outfit he had Amber Heard wear. Revealed in Walter Isaacson’s new biography on Musk, the tech billionaire made his then-girlfriend Heard cosplay as Mercy for him. It is one of many revelations to come from the new biography, including his difficult relationship with his father, his child’s peculiar names and his relationships with his ex-wives. One aspect of the biography is his love for the Overwatch character Mercy and of video games more generally. The X/Twitter owner even posted a picture of Heard in costume on the app. But Pohl, who played the character in the game, responded by not only taking a swing at the costume but also at Musk’s electric car company, Tesla. She said: “As the real Mercy I can see the manufacturing defects in this cosplay like it’s a Tesla.” Tesla has gained an unwanted reputation for having quality control issues in recent years, and earlier in 2023 was forced to recall 1.1m cars in China over a braking defect. Pohl even responded with a picture of her own Mercy costume – and hers was even customised to the “spooky” skin in the game. Musk did not confirm why he chose Mercy, but he said: “[Heard] did dress up as Mercy. It was awesome.” Heard and Musk reportedly dated for much of 2017, following the breakdown of Heard’s marriage with the actor Johnny Depp. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Virgil van Dijk excited about Darwin Nunez potential after recent goal rush
Virgil van Dijk excited about Darwin Nunez potential after recent goal rush
Virgil van Dijk believes striker Darwin Nunez is starting to realise the potential which persuaded Liverpool to spend a possible club-record transfer fee on him. The Uruguay international endured a testing start to life at Anfield and although he scored 16 goals, the feeling remained he had underperformed. He has already played a significant part this season, scoring two late goals as a substitute to beat Newcastle, and with Mohamed Salah on the bench he took responsibility for equalising through a penalty in their eventual 3-1 Europa League victory over LASK in Austria. Nunez has three goals and two assists this season but his all-round influence has been felt more than just from that contribution. The Uruguayan, who had missed a couple of earlier chances but was denied a certain goal by a brilliant point-blank save by goalkeeper Tobias Lawal in the first half, also played a role in the second goal with his hold-up play on the halfway line. Liverpool’s captain believes the 24-year-old is developing into the striker they hoped they were getting when they paid Benfica an initial £64million, which could rise to £85m, last summer. “Everyone has a role to play whether you start or not. Everyone has now seen the potential and the quality he has. “Against LASK Darwin was important with the goal. Long may it continue, and with the other boys as well. “Up front, the competition is quite good. They all have to push each other and it’s good to see.” One of those “other boys” – quite literally – was Ben Doak who became Liverpool’s fourth-youngest European player with his first start at the age of 17 years and 314 days. The young Scot was given a run in Salah’s right-wing position and showed flashes of his talent despite being starved of opportunities in a poor first-half performance by the team. “It was a big night for him,” added Van Dijk. “It was never going to be easy, it was a difficult pitch, but he could have set up at least two goals in the first half where he went past his man like no one was there but unfortunately nobody was on the end of it. “I am pleased for him and I’m also very excited for him and the future that’s coming. “You’ve seen in the last couple of weeks, if you watch closely it’s a fantastic group to be part of. “We have a lot of quality, a lot of younger players, players who are getting new roles and they are enjoying that as well. “But at the end of the day football is about results. Everybody wants to play their best football each and every game, but sometimes you have to find a way, like we did at Wolves (coming back from conceding first again to win 3-1). “On Thursday it was after we conceded a set-piece, we showed that we stayed calm and found a way as well.”

Chelsea transfer news: Moises Caicedo, Michael Olise, Romelu Lukaku, Trevoh Chalobah and more
Chelsea transfer news: Moises Caicedo, Michael Olise, Romelu Lukaku, Trevoh Chalobah and more
After Chelsea experienced their worst season since the establishment of the Premier League, American owner Todd Boehly has taken significant measures to bring about change at Stamford Bridge. The Blues went through a revolving door of three managers last season, including Thomas Tuchel (now at Bayern Munich), Graham Potter, and interim manager and club legend Frank Lampard. Now, Mauricio Pochettino, who previously led London rivals Tottenham to a Champions League final, will take over the reins and attempt to restore stability to a club that won the Champions League as recently as 2021. This summer, the club has witnessed an astonishing number of departures already, with several key players leaving who played pivotal roles at Stamford Bridge over the past few seasons. Among those having exited are Edouard Mendy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, N’Golo Kante, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, and Christian Pulisic. These departures mark the beginning of a new era at Chelsea and may be the transformative change required for the club to regain its place in Europe. Here are the latest transfer rumours regarding the Blues: Moises Caicedo With Kovacic, Kante and Mount departing, Chelsea will look to bring in some central midfield replacements. One such player that the Blues may target is Brighton’s Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorian was a key player as Brighton finished sixth but has been the subject of much interest from the league’s biggest club. Chelsea’s latest bid of £80m bid has been rejected, with Brighton holding firm on their £100m valuation. It is thought that Brighton would have been willing to accept a deal that also involves Levi Colwill returning to the Amex on a permanent basis after his successful loan spell last year, but that appears unlikely with The Guardian reporting that the 21-year-old is ready to sign a six-year-deal to stay at the London club. Michael Olise After a summer of outgoings so far for the west London club, Chelsea now appear to be turning their focus to incomings as they look to assemble a squad that can improve on last season’s miserable campaign. One player reportedly being eyed up is Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, with RMC Sport suggesting that the Blues have tabled a bid for the French winger. Olise is said to have a £35m release clause in his contract, which runs until 2026, with Chelsea willing to pay above the buyout clause to secure preferable terms of payment for the 21-year-old. Chelsea are not alone in their interest in the playmaker, with Arsenal, Manchester City and PSG also said to be interested in Olise. Romelu Lukaku The Belgian has endured a torrid spell at the club since returning in 2021 and now looks set to leave the club for the second time this summer. The 30-year-old is unlikely to return to Inter, where he spent last season on loan, but could be staying in the Serie A with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Juventus are interested in the striker and a swap deal with Dusan Vlahovic. Chelsea turned down a similar deal in July but are said to be re-considering the deal now. Trevor Chalobah Wesley Fofana’s second long-term knee injury had meant that Trevor Chalobah was likely to stay at Stamford Bridge to provide cover at centre-back. However, with the imminent arrival of Axel Disasi, the Englishman now looks to have his eyes set on leaving this window to ensure playing time next season. The Evening Standard are reporting that the Blues would be willing to accept a bid of £45million for the 25-year-old with Inter one of the clubs with a long-standing interest in the centre-back. Robert Sanchez With Edouard Mendy leaving for the Saudi Pro League, Chelsea look set to dip into the market as they search for a replacement to provide competition to Kepa Arrizabalaga. That man could be Brighton’s Robert Sanchez who lost his place in the team to Jason Steele last season and did not travel to the US for Brighton’s pre-season tour. According to The Athletic, Chelsea have made an offer for the Spaniard but have yet to receive a response from Brighton. Mohammed Kudus Playing for Ajax, Kudus can play in a more attacking central midfield role as well as out on the right wing and could be the latest player to leave the Dutch club as they continue their cost-cutting measures having failed to qualify for the Champions League. The Ghanaian international could cost up to £40m and has attracted interest from Arsenal, according to The Daily Mail. Despite this, Chelsea are also said to be interested in the player with David Ornstein reporting that Chelsea have made contact with the Dutch side about a move for the 22-year-old. Callum Hudson-Odoi Chelsea’s outgoings are not done for the summer, however, with Callum Hudson-Odoi the latest to be linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old had an unsuccessful loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen last season and is reportedly training with the Under-21’s currently. Hudson-Odoi only has one year left on his contract with The Evening Standard reporting that the winger has agreed personal terms with Fulham ahead of a move to the Premier League side. Lazio are another team said to be interested in the winger but the Serie A club are yet to table a formal bid. Conor Gallagher The Chelsea midfielder has featured during the club’s pre-season tour to America but reportedly is being offered out to clubs as the west London outfit continue their clearout after a hugely disappointing season last year. Gallagher has been at Chelsea since he was six but has just two years left on his current deal. Tottenham are said to be interested but they will also face competition from West Ham who have made a move for the Englishman as they look to fill the void left by Declan Rice’s record-breaking move to Arsenal. According to Sky Sports, the Hammers’ initial bid of £40m has been rejected with Chelsea wanting £50m for their 23-year-old midfielder.
