The Call Of Duty Endowment Helps Women Veterans Feel Their Value
Growing up, Navy veteran Rocio Palmero always felt a bit different. It was a sense she couldn’t shake as a young Latina woman in LA, where she couldn’t see herself following the expected get married-buy a house-have kids path right out of school, it was something that followed her through her two years of active duty and 12 years as a reservist woman in the Navy, and it’s something she still feels a bit, even now. About 10 percent of veterans in the US are women, but, across the country, less than 2 percent of women are veterans, according to the Labor Department.

Dillon Danis calls Logan Paul a 'pu**y' and tells him to meet him anywhere for a fight
Mixed martial artist Dillon Danis has challenged Logan Paul to meet him ‘anywhere in London’, after a dramatic press conference to promote their fight in Manchester in October ended without a face-off between the two fighters. Danis and Paul will enter the ring for a fight during the same event which sees musician and YouTuber KSI take on boxer Tommy Fury. However, when the pair were unable to finish the conference with a classic face-to-face, Danis tweeted: “I wanted a face-off with Logan Paul. He called it off in fear of his life and got me escorted out. “Meet anywhere in London p****.” Paul, meanwhile, put out his own tweet claiming Danis “threw a tantrum and left the arena before our face off”, attaching a photo of him confronting Mike Perry – “a real fighter who will actually show up” - instead. The comment is a reference to Danis previously being booked to fight KSI earlier this year, before pulling out. And things were already tense in the build-up to the press conference, as Paul took to Instagram Live to claim Danis “lodged himself in his [hotel] room” and is “not showing up” for their filmed face-to-face, before Danis finally arrived 40 minutes late. And Danis couldn’t help but clap back on Twitter in relation to the delay, joking he “had a surprise in the hotel room for my birthday”, sharing yet another picture of Paul’s fiancée Nina Agdal. During the press conference itself, Danis walked on-stage with the same Toy Story alien hat worn by Paul in his infamous 2017 video from Japan’s Aokigahara forest in which he filmed a person who had died by suicide, and then launched Prime bottles into the audience. Paul, meanwhile, had his own surprise props, beginning with a poster appearing to show Danis in an altercation together with text saying “real fighter”, and ending with a birthday cake depicting a bloodied Danis knocked out on the floor. The conference was brought to a sudden halt, however, when Fury’s father John Fury punched a table before flipping them all over. As the chaos ensued, Paul got the head of Danis from his cake and lobbed it at his opponent. While the event resumed for a face-off between KSI and Fury, which saw the former push the latter, no face-off took place between Danis and Paul. The boxing match involving all four fighters takes place in Manchester on 14 October. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. iPhone 15 Pro: Apple reveals premium phone with brand new material and features
Apple has unveiled the new iPhone 15 Pro, with an entirely new material. The new device will be made out of titanium, and rely on a host of new manufacturing processes. Its new material and design allows it to be the lightest Pro phone Apple has made, and includes the thinnest edges around the display. As well as the titanium, the new phone has the toughest glass-based material in the industry and an aluminium structure inside the phone, with the two materials joined in a new way that should make the phone extra strong, Apple said. The glass is now much easier to replace, Apple said. :: Follow our coverage of the Apple event here. It comes in two sizes, 6.1-inches and 6.7-inches. And it comes in four new colours: black, white, blue and a natural titanium. The titanium itself is a “grade five” alloy, Apple said, the same material used on the Mars rover. The new material also brings a new look, with a brushed texture on the side of the phone. As well as the new material, the iPhone 15 Pro brings a new customisable “action button” on the side of the phone, and an improved “A17 Pro” chip inside it. The action button replaces the mute switch on the side of the phone, and does the same job by default. But it can be changed to start voice memos, open the camera – or to start complex processes, by using Apple’s Shortcuts app. The new chip has “next-level performance”, Apple said, with improvements including dramatically improved graphics performance. Apple claimed the device is a “new chapter in iPhone performance”, and it focused particularly on the gaming performance that the new chip will allow. The iPhone 15 Pro has “the equivalent of seven camera lenses”, Apple said, even though it retains the three visible lenses on the back of the phone. That is partly because the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 5x optical zoom, by using the extra space in the bigger device as well as a “tetra prism” design that bounces light around in the phone. The new camera also has a new coating to reduce lens flare, and better performance in low light. Like the normal iPhone 15, it has a 48 megapixel camera but offers the option to merge that down into a 24 megapixel image, which Apple said should allow for better quality and high resolution images. Like its cheaper iPhone 15 sibling, the 15 Pro will also be the first phone to switch to a USB-C charging port to charge. In the Pro model, that allows for USB 3 speeds, Apple said. Greek shipping minister resigns over the death of a man who was pushed off a ferry ramp
Greece’s shipping minister resigned Monday over the death of a man who was pushed off a ferry ramp by a crew member after arriving late. A Greek prosecutor brought criminal charges against the captain of the island ferry and three crew members over the encounter in the port of Piraeus, near Athens, that resulted in the Sept. 5 drowning of Andonis Kargiotis, 36. One crew member faces a charge of homicide with possible intent. Amateur video posted online showed the passenger running onto the Blue Horizon ferry’s loading ramp as the ship had cast off its moorings and was about to leave for the island of Crete. He tried to push past two crew members and then was pushed off the ramp when he tried again. The footage showed the man disappearing in water churned up by the ferry leaving the dock as crew members stepped away. The ship was eventually ordered to return but the man was found unresponsive. He was later determined to have drowned by a medical examiner. “No one can imagine that Greek sailors, violating the age-old rules for the protection of human life at sea, pushed and abandoned an unfortunate young man,” Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Miltiadis Varvitsiotis wrote in an online post after submitting his resignation. Political opponents had accused Varvitsiotis, 54, of initially downplaying the ferry incident. He became maritime minister after Greece’s conservative government won a landslide reelection victory in June. Varvitsiotis apologized last week over remarks made in a private television interview in which he expressed sympathy for the indicted crew members. “There are those who grieve for the man so unfairly lost and also those who grieve for the people who went to earn their wage, a day’s pay, who now find themselves accused of murder,” he said in the interview. Christos Stylianides, a former Greek Cabinet member in charge of disaster response, was named as his replacement Monday. Despite its convincing election victory three months ago, the Greek government has found itself on the defensive over its handling of major wildfires and ongoing massive floods this summer.
