Elon Musk reacts angrily to criticism for giving in to governments’ Twitter censorship demands
Twitter boss Elon Musk, who has often touted himself as a champion of free speech, said he had no "actual choice" when accused of caving in to censorship demands made by authoritarian governments. Since the billionaire's takeover in October last year, Twitter has approved 83 per cent more censorship requests from governments such as Turkey and India, El Pais reported. The company reportedly received 971 requests from governments, fully acceding to 808 of them and partially acceding to 154. The year prior to Mr Musk taking control, Twitter agreed to 50 per cent of such requests, which was in line with the compliance rate indicated in the company’s last transparency report. The report, shared by Bloomberg columnist Matthew Yglesias, evoked an angry reaction from Mr Musk. Mr Yglesias tweeted the report with the caption "I’m a free speech absolutist", quoting the Twitter boss. The world's second-richest person shot back, writing: "You're such a numbskull. Please point out where we had an actual choice and we will reverse it." The columnist responded: "Look, I’m not the one who bought Twitter amidst a blaze of proclamations about free speech principles. "Obviously you’re within your rights to run your business however you want." Mr Musk has repeatedly reiterated his backing for free speech both before and since the $44bn acquisition of Twitter. The “absolutist” quote refers to a tweet in March 2022 in the wake of Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. "Starlink has been told by some governments (not Ukraine) to block Russian news sources. We will not do so unless at gunpoint," Mr Musk tweeted. "Sorry to be a free speech absolutist." Yet Twitter has been accused of helping incumbent Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan stifle criticism by blocking several accounts in the two days before the country’s hotly contested general election. “In response to legal process and to ensure Twitter remains available to the people of Turkey, we have taken action to restrict access to some content in Turkey today,” Twitter’s global government affairs announced, without explaining which tweets would be blocked. Following severe criticism, Mr Musk alleged Twitter has “pushed harder for free speech than any other internet company, including Wokipedia”. Earlier this year in India, Twitter complied after Narendra Modi’s government used emergency powers to ban content related to a BBC documentary on social media. The two-part documentary included a previously unpublished report from the UK Foreign Office that held Mr Modi “directly responsible” for the “climate of impunity” that enabled communal violence in Gujarat state. The riots in February 2002 killed over 1,000 people – most of them Muslims – while Mr Modi was chief minister of the state. Justifying the consent Mr Musk said: "The rules in India for what can appear on social media are quite strict, and we can’t go beyond the laws of a country." He said doing so would put his staff at risk. “If we have a choice of either our people going to prison or us complying with the laws, we will comply with the laws.” Read More Elon Musk tweets quote by neo-Nazi wrongly attributed to Voltaire Erdogan declared winner of Turkey presidential run-off – extending his 20 years in power India uses emergency powers to ban anyone from sharing clips of BBC Modi documentary Elon Musk tweets quote by neo-Nazi wrongly attributed to Voltaire Elon Musk’s Neuralink brain chip company gets FDA approval for human testing AOC jokes more people watched her gaming online than listened to DeSantis launch

How to make TikTok's cinnamon rolls with heavy cream
TikTok trends are often as random as they come and one current obsession on the video app revolves around a rather delicious-looking cinnamon roll. The roll, which contains a heavy serving of cream, was actually created by chef @marleysrose back in May 2022 but has since gone viral again and the recipe has now been viewed more than one million times. This is hardly the first time a cinnamon roll has gone viral on TikTok but this heavily cream-drenched version is the one currently doing the rounds. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter If you are wondering why there is so much cream it's because it makes the dough less dry compared to the traditional icing topping that usually accompanies the dessert. That being said, less of the technical stuff and let's just find out how to make them. @marleysrose Cinnamon Roll hack with heavy whipping cream #cinnamonrolls #cinnamonrollhack #breakfast #brunch Obviously, you'll need a few things to start with such as a baking tray, an oven and all the necessary ingredients. Recipe: Put your pre-made cinnamon rolls in a baking dish. Then pour half a cup of whipping cream on top of the rolls. Put the rolls and the cream for the amount of time that it says on the packet. Once ready top with the icing of your choice. And that's it. Bon appetite and enjoy. Have your say in our news democracy. Rihanna flooded with praise for sharing beautiful breastfeeding snaps
Rihanna has been hailed as an icon to mums after sharing a joyous photo of herself breastfeeding her baby boy. The Grammy-Award winner, who’s expecting her second child this summer with A$AP Rocky, announced the launch of a new Savage x Fenty maternity line on Tuesday. Her clothing brand celebrated the release of its new capsule collection for “moms and moms-to-be” by posting snaps of the superstar feeding her one-year-old son RZA. The caption to the Instagram offering read: “Not ur mama's maternity bras...designed by [Rihanna], approved by baby RZA.” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The post racked up nearly 2,000 comments in just six hours as fans gushed over the gorgeous images. “Pregnant with one while breastfeeding another. Women are amazing,” wrote one admirer. “I remember in 2020 when I was breastfeeding I was like damn Riri needs to sell us fashionable maternity bras. Now I need another baby,” joked a second. “I’ve been looking forward to a maternity line even though I don’t have any kids,” admitted a third. “Bless you Rihanna for releasing a maternity collection while I’m pregnant,” said a fourth. “[And] this is why I will always buy everything from Rih! She understands EVERY assignment,” added a fifth. And a sixth said: “I’m so glad I’m waiting to have children. By the time I’m pregnant Rihanna will have made all the accessories for me and my baby to be dope as hell.” The exciting new maternity line features three new bralette styles and comfortable hipster briefs, with prices starting at just £6.60. It also includes an oversized graphic t-shirt that reads: “Make More Babies.” “The new maternity capsule is about bringing that confidence and comfort to moms at every stage of their journeys,” RihannaVogue ahead of the drop. “I want to remind people that you can still channel sexiness and feel good while being a parent.” It’s not the first time the 35-year-old RnB legend has waxed lyrical about motherhood to the fashion mag. Shortly after her internet-breaking Super Bowl performance in February – when she revealed she was pregnant with baby number two - she spoke to British Vogue about how her life has changed since becoming a mum. “It’s everything. You really don’t remember life before, that’s the craziest thing ever,” she said. “You literally try to remember it — and there are photos of my life before — but the feeling, the desires, the things that you enjoy, everything, you just don’t identify with it because you don’t even allow yourself mentally to get that far … because it doesn’t matter.” Have your say in our news democracy.
