Family discover live frog in 'triple-washed' spinach packet
Kermit the Frog has always told us it’s not easy being green. But sometimes it’s not easy eating greens either. At least, that is, not for one Michigan family, who made a shocking discovery when unpacking their weekly shop. Amber Worrick told Fox 2 that her daughter screamed when she picked up the box of Earthbound Farms Organic Spinach only to find that there was a stowaway inside. “My daughter was screaming, she was like ‘Oh my God, it’s a frog,” Worrick said. “And I was like, ‘What?’” Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The amphibian, which turned out to be a California native Pacific tree frog, was camouflaged among the leaves and still very much alive. Worrick explained to the local news outlet that she hadn’t noticed anything unusual when she picked up the veg at a local supermarket. “I didn’t see anything,” she insisted, adding that it “didn’t feel heavy” and she “didn’t feel anything wiggling.” Naturally, she went back to the Meijir supermarket, in the town of Southfield, to return the goods, bringing the tiny intruder along with her. Representatives for the shop told Fox 2 that the frog had been relocated to a new home outside by their team members, and that it was “alive and well”. Worrick seems to have been pleased at this result, telling the outlet: "I didn't want [the frog] to die, but I didn't want him in my food.” The spinach brand’s parent company, Taylor Farms, reportedly sent a statement apologising for the unusual mishap and vowing to work hard to prevent similar occurrences in future. Worrick was somewhat critical of them, however, saying of her purchase: "On the package, it says three times washed, or something like triple washed. I don't believe that it was washed or else they would have caught a whole live frog." Still, she conceded: “Thank God I didn’t eat [it]”. Have your say in our news democracy. 'Unreal scenes' as Sergio Ramos presents Shakira with award for her Pique diss track
The Latin Grammy's took place on Friday night and has been hailed for an epic piece on trolling as Shakira was awarded 'Best Song of the Year' for her diss track on ex Gerard Pique - which was presented to her by his former football rival Sergio Ramos. If you've been keeping track of the epic break-up between Shakira and Pique, you'll know that they separated in June last year after 11 years together, with the footballer being accused of cheating on the Colombian pop star. The break-up has hardly been peaceful with the former lovers using any opportunity they can to take very public digs at each other. The most notable of these digs is Shakira's record-breaking diss track about the former Barcelona and Spain defender 'BZRP Music Session #53.' The song, which is a collaboration with Karol G, also won Best Pop Song but it was the appearance of Ramos at the event in Seville, which really got people talking. Ramos, who played with Pique for the Spanish national team, winning both the World Cup and the Euros, would have been fierce rivals on the pitch too having clashed many times while playing for Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. Although the interaction between the pair wasn't awkward, people couldn't help but revel in the scenes that were unfolding before their eyes. During her acceptance speech, the 46-year-old singer spoke of "tough moments" adding: "I also want to share this with my Spanish audience, who has been there with me through the good and bad times." "In those hard and tough moments I've experienced here in this country, I have loved so much but at no moment has stopped giving me love and support." Pique retired from football in November 2022 having played more than 600 games for Barcelona. Ramos, meanwhile, is still playing having recently rejoined Sevilla having enjoyed a glittering spell at Real Madrid before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. NATO chief appears likely to stay on as allies struggle to find a replacement for him
NATO chief appears likely to stay on as allies struggle to find a replacement for him
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg seems increasingly likely to have his term at the helm of the world’s biggest security organization extended yet again, as members struggle to agree on another candidate to replace him. Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian prime minister, has been NATO’s top civilian official since 2014. His term was due to expire last year but was extended for a second time to keep a steady hand at the helm after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. President Joe Biden and his NATO counterparts are due to choose a successor when they meet for a summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, on July 11-12. No candidate has been proposed publicly, and leaders usually decide by consensus on who should be appointed. Stoltenberg held talks with Biden in Washington on Tuesday. According to a U.S. official familiar with the leaders’ conversations, Biden made clear that he thinks highly of some the possible candidates whose names have been privately floated to succeed him. The official said, however, Biden conveyed to the NATO secretary-general that it’s “becoming increasingly evident that there’s not going to be consensus” among NATO allies on picking a new leader, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private conversation. Biden made it clear to Stoltenberg that he would welcome him sticking around longer — particularly with no end in sight to the war in Ukraine and challenges to get Sweden approved as a member of the 31-nation alliance. “The president thinks Stoltenberg has done a remarkable job over the past year and a half leading the alliance during Russia’s invasion,” the official said. “He’s also quite comfortable with Stoltenberg hanging on. He thinks he’s been a very effective leader.” The official stopped short of saying that Biden asked Stoltenberg outright to stay on as NATO chief. Asked repeatedly Friday about his future at the helm, Stoltenberg said: “I have nothing more to say about this. I have stated again and again that I don’t seek an extension. I have no other plans than to end my work here, when my tenure ends this fall.” The U.S. official also said that Biden had spoken highly of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. NATO is keen to name a woman to the top post, and Denmark’s prime minister was thought to be a favorite after a meeting with Biden earlier this month. But in a televised interview on Thursday, Frederiksen said: “No, I am not on my way to NATO.” She did say that she would back Stoltenberg if he was willing to extend his mandate. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also made clear that he would back an extension for Stoltenberg if that became necessary. “If we don’t agree on a candidate for successor, NATO won’t be able to go without a secretary-general, and of course I am for an extension — particularly as I appreciate our cooperation,” he told reporters. Norwegian media said Friday that Biden has encouraged Stoltenberg to stay on. Norwegian public broadcaster NRK said it “had learned” that Biden’s message to Stoltenberg “was not to be misunderstood: Jens Stoltenberg must remain as Secretary General of NATO for a while longer.” The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has also ruled out her candidacy. Other possible names that were floated are Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and U.K. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace. ___ Madhani reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Jan M.
