Did The Simpsons predict Tyson Fury’s controversial win against Francis Ngannou?
Did The Simpsons predict Tyson Fury’s controversial win against Francis Ngannou?
A second member of the Fury family has scored a contentious boxing win over their opponent, with Tyson Fury beating Francis Ngannou by way of split decision in Saudi Arabia on Saturday night, and sparking claims Ngannou was “robbed” of a victory. It’s not the first time this month that the charge has been levelled at a Fury, as 14 October saw Tyson’s half-brother Tommy (of Love Island fame) defeat YouTuber Olajide “KSI” Olatunji in a divisive majority decision result – later revised to a unanimous decision following a judging error. The rapper and content creator didn’t react well to the “outrageous” result, one he said he was going to appeal. Twitter/X was just as shocked by the outcome, to the extent that “rigged” trended on the social media platform after the fight. And a similar accusation was made by users following Saturday’s match, not least because Ngannou managed to knock down Fury during their bout: Some have even claimed The Simpsons – famed for having many episodes coincidentally foreshadow real-life events – predicted the fight’s result: The story in question is “The Homer They Fall” from season eight of the popular animated series, in which the disaster-prone dad takes up professional boxing, only to get a pounding from fighter Drederick Tatum. However, it can’t really be said that The Simpsons guessed the outcome of this particular scrap. Al Jean, one of the show’s original writers, told NME that another writer offered up this explanation: “[He said] if you write 700 episodes, and you don’t predict anything, then you’re pretty bad. “If you throw enough darts, you’re going to get some bullseyes…” Not to mention that the image of bartender Moe Szyslak raising Homer’s hand is not how the fight ends. Instead, just as Tatum is about to deliver a knockout blow to a dazed Simpson, Szyslak swoops in on a paramotor to fly him out of the building to safety. And that definitely didn’t happen in the Fury vs Ngannou match… Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter How to join the indy100's free WhatsApp channel Have your say in our news democracy. Jessie J announces name of her and Chanan Safir Colman’s baby boy
Jessie J has revealed the name of her newborn baby, who she welcomed last month with partner Chanan Safir Colman. The “Domino” singer has been enjoying being a new mother and celebrated her son’s one-month milestone on Sunday (11 June). Today (Monday 12 June), she posted a new photograph of her baby boy and wrote in the caption: “Mans like… Sky Safir Cornish Colman.” Jessie, whose full name is Jessica Cornish, also shared several snaps from the day she gave birth to Sky on her Instagram Stories. In one photo, she is pictured still in her hospital dressing gown with her son on her chest. In one photo, she is making a fist pump gesture, indicating her happiness at having given birth. Another post is a selfie of her, Colman and Sky posing in front of a mirror and smiling as a family. To mark his first month, Jessie shared a reel including the first moments of Sky’s birth. She said that the past 30 days have “felt like one long best day of my entire life”. “Mummy and Daddy love you more than anything in this world baby boy,” she added. Jessie also thanked her fans for following her pregnancy and motherhood journey, adding: “Please join me in sharing in my joy.” Colman also shared a black-and-white photo of him holding Sky in his hands to commemorate the baby’s first month of life. He wrote: “Since you were born, work, food and sleep seem completely irrelevant. When you look deep into my soul while taking the biggest s*** in my hands, I smile, when you pee all over me while I change you, I laugh, when you frantically kiss/suck on the side of my face, shoulder or neck looking for your mother’s breast, my heart smiles, and when you fall asleep on me with your arms wrapped around me, I feel complete.” Last January, Jessie revealed that she was pregnant one year after she suffered a miscarriage. At the time, the singer said she was “so happy and terrified” to share the news and asked fans to “be gentle with me”. Announcing the birth of her son, she wrote on her Instagram Story that her heart “grew twice the size”. “I am flying in love. He is magic. He is all my dreams come true. He is my whole [world]. He and I are both doing great,” she said. “I am soaking up every second and can’t believe he is real, here, and mine.” The singer previously kept her baby’s father’s identity under wraps, but recently revealed that her partner is the Danish-Israeli basketball player Colman. “I struggle to keep things private. I think if you know me you know that. I want to protect people I love and keep it for just myself...and then so often I think f*** it because life is short but I don’t want to regret it,” she said in an Instagram post. Cornish shared that she met Colman during a difficult time after she had dealt with her miscarriage in 2021 and described him as a “beam of light”. “He lit up my dark days. It was a whirlwind love and a miracle that we fell pregnant naturally with not one issue during,” she recalled. Ukraine-Russia war– live: Captured Ukrainian soldiers reveal torture in Russian prison – report
Former Ukrainian captives have alleged they were subjected to torture, including electric shocks, while they were held at a detention facility in Russia. Speaking to the BBC over a dozen former detainees detailed the alleged physical and psychological abuse they suffered at the hands of Russian officers and guards at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility Number Two in Taganrog. They have since been released in prisoner exchanges. Guards at the facility carry black batons and metal bars to beat the captives in the legs, arms, or “anywhere they wanted”, senior lieutenant Artem Seredniak was quoted as saying. “It’s what they call ‘reception’,” he said. The captives were left under-nourished and the injured were not provided appropriate medical assistance, according to the report, which details a number of potential serious violations of international law. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government is set to build new fortifications and military infrastructure in northeast regions that border Russia and Belarus at a cost of nearly $35m, prime minister Denys Shmyhal has said. “At the request of Kharkiv and Chernihiv... we are allocating 911.5m hryvnias ($24.7m) for Kharkiv and 363m ($9.8m) for Chernihiv to build military engineering and fortification structures,” Mr Shmyhal said on Telegram.
