The Philadelphia Phillies were in the midst of the NL Wild Card picture on the day of the MLB trade deadline and decided to make a push for a starting pitcher. They gave the Detroit Tigers a call and were able to bring in Michael Lorenzen, in exchange for Philadelphia's No. 5 prospect, Hao-Yu Lee.
After just two starts, the Lorenzen trade may be the best deal of the 2023 MLB trade deadline.
On Wednesday night, Lorenzen made his first official home start as a member of the Phillies, taking on the Washington Nationals. He carried a no-hitter through the seventh inning and had 100 pitches thrown. Most managers would have taken Lorenzen out due to the pitch count, but not Rob Thomson.
In the ninth inning, on his 124th pitch thrown, Lorenzen forced Dominic Smith to fly out to center fielder Johan Rojas. With that, Lorenzen threw the Phillies' 14th no-no in franchise history. This is also the first time a Phillies pitcher threw a no-hitter since Cole Hamels did so back in 2015.
