Sam Smith fans vent frustrations as singer cancels show after four songs
Sam Smith described feeling "heartbroken" after "vocal issues" caused them to stop their Manchester concert last night, just four songs into the set. The singer took to the stage at AO Arena on Wednesday (May 24) and earlier teased fans on social media that there would be a "special surprise" near the end of the gig - they earlier shared a brief clip to social media, hinting at a collaboration with Madonna. However, after performing their 2017 song 'Too Good at Goodbyes', the lights went out at the venue as the show suddenly stopped. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter At first confused fans at the show speculated there was a "power cut" after the lights went dark for approximately 20 minutes but were later informed the show was cancelled due to Smith having "vocal issues". But Smith posted a statement to Instagram to explain the reason their concert was abruptly cut short. "Dearest sailors, I don’t know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows. "Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise at the end," they wrote. "During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong." They added: "I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn't finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry." Since then fans have expressed their disappointment on Twitter, believing Smith should have cancelled their Manchester show earlier. While some described the "anxiety" in the crowd as it was the sixth anniversary of the terror attack at Manchester Arena just days before on May 22. While others wished Smith well, hoping that their voice was okay. Earlier this year, Smith achieved their third UK number one album, with Gloria. Have your say in our news democracy. Tina Turner’s final words to Angela Bassett revealed in ‘beautiful’ tribute to rock 'n' roll singer
Tina Turner’s final words to Angela Bassett revealed in ‘beautiful’ tribute to rock 'n' roll singer
Actor Angela Bassett, who played Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It, has shared an emotional tribute to the 'Proud Mary' singer following her death at the age of 83. Official social media channels for Turner, who was also known for the hit 'The Best', shared the news on Wednesday evening (May 25), remembering her “boundless passion for life” which “enchanted fans worldwide and inspired future stars”. A statement from a representative confirmed the singer “died peacefully” at her home in Switzerland “after a long illness”. Tributes soon flooded in honouring the musician, with stars such as Mick Jagger, Beyoncé and Diana Ross paying their respects. In Bassett’s tribute to Turner – born Anna Mae Bullock – on Instagram, the Golden Globe-winning actor said farewell to “a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world”. She continued: “Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion and freedom should look like. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter “Her final words to me – for me – were, ‘You never mimicked me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world.’ “I shall hold these words close to my heart for the rest of my days. I am honoured to have known Tina Turner. I am humbled to have helped show her to the world. “So on today, while we mourn the loss of this iconic voice and presence, she gave us more than we could have ever asked. She gave us her whole self. “And Tina Turner is a gift that that will always be "simply the best." Angels sing thee to thy rest…Queen.” Others commended Bassett for her words, with fellow actor Amirah Vann saying the tribute was “beautiful”. Another wrote: “You made me forget there was someone else on screen. You two were born to cross paths and I’m glad we had you to honour her.” “Beautifully put and powerfully portrayed. There will never be another like her,” commented The Princess Bride actor Cary Elwes. Elsewhere, Turner’s final interview before her passing – to The Guardian as part of its Q&A column – has resurfaced in which she revealed how she would like to be remembered. “As the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. As a woman who showed other women that it is OK to strive for success on their own terms,” she said. Have your say in our news democracy. Lily Allen's three word message about Brexit says it all
Lily Allen's three word message about Brexit says it all
Singer and actress Lily Allen simply tweeted ‘Brexit was dumb’ earlier this weekan and was met with overwhelming agreement from many. Since 52 percent of the British public voted to leave the European Union back in 2016, many have come to the conclusion that the decision was a mistake, after rising prices, limited economic growth, and other negative impacts that have risen as a result of Brexit. The 38-year-old singer’s tweet got over 9,000 likes and over 700 retweets. Making it clear that many shared similar feelings to Allen. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Some even said that Allen’s tweet didn’t go far enough, with one user commenting: ‘You win the Twitter Understatement of the Year Award.’ Others left comments such as ‘facts!’, and ‘simply put, and true.’ Of course, there were some who disagreed with Allen’s statement. One user said ‘it was the best thing to happen to the UK this century.’ Some users wanted Allen to give her reasonings for the statement. This isn’t the first time the 'Smile' singer has expressed her disagreement with the UK’s decision to leave the EU. Back in 2017, Allen posted a tweet that told Brexiteers they were ‘responsible for everything bad that happens to the UK.’ A YouGov poll from 2022 found 1 in 5 Britons who voted for Brexit now think it was the wrong decision. As well as Nigel Farage, a key Brexiteer in the Vote Leave campaign, admitting earlier this month that Brexit had ‘failed’. Have your say in our news democracy. Meeting your other half's parents can be daunting, so you can only imagine how intimidating it must be if their father is none other than, Sylvester Stallone. His two daughters recently appeared on the Giggly Squad podcast, where they opened up about the famed actor being a "savant" when it comes to their dating lives. "In one area, he writes most of our breakup texts," Sistine confessed, while Sophia chimed in and offered her advice to fellow women: "I highly suggest that girls should go up to their dad and have their dad write a breakup text because men know men." Sistine went on to add that her exes have never been mad at her honesty from such text messages. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter When it comes to bringing a new man home, the pair admitted the Rocky star isn't the most welcoming. When Sistine thinks she's found a "good egg" and opts to introduce him to her father, "he's always standoffish, stands in the corner, doesn’t say anything." Sophia jokingly added that he "always has a cigar" during the initial meets. “I go, ‘Why do you do that?’ And he goes, 'I can tell within the first four minutes of meeting him if he’s going to last or not, and so I’m not going to waste my time,'" she continued. "And he’s right every time." That said, the pair disclaimed that the star gets along with their younger sister's partner. "He only likes my sister’s boyfriend," Sophia said. "He’s kind of got the thing with the watches, and he likes polo… If you can relate on things with him, he’ll like you." Have your say in our news democracy.
