Weird Al shares shockingly low amount he makes from Spotify Wrapped
Satirical artist Weird Al has shared just how little musicians are making from Spotify - even if they're in your Wrapped's top five artists. Users received personal 'thank you' video messages from artists if they made it into their top five list, however, Weird Al used the opportunity to remind everyone that the streams don't equal cash. “It’s my understanding that I had over 80 million streams on Spotify this year, so, if I’m doing the math right that means I earned… $12", he told fans, adding he'd be using the money to buy a sandwich. The Pogues' brutal putdown of Laurence Fox called one of Shane MacGowan's 'finest works'
The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan died “peacefully” on the morning of November 30 with his wife Victoria and family at his side. A statement shared on behalf of his wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, his sister Siobhan and father, Maurice, on The Pogues’ official Instagram said: “It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of SHANE MACGOWAN. “Shane died peacefully at 3am this morning (30 November, 2023) with his wife Victoria and family by his side. Prayers and the last rites were read which gave comfort to his family. “He is survived by his wife Victoria, his sister Siobhan and his father, Maurice, family and a large circle of friends. Further details will be announced shortly but the family ask for privacy at this very sad time”. Irish President Michael D Higgins said there was “particular poignancy” that the death of Shane MacGowan had followed closely that of Sinead O’Connor. He said: “Born on Christmas Day, there was perhaps some form of destiny which led Shane to writing Fairytale Of New York, the timeless quality of which will surely mean that it will be listened to every Christmas for the next century or more. “Likewise songs like Rainy Night In Soho, A Pair Of Brown Eyes, If I Should Fall From Grace With God and so many others will live on far into the years and decades to come. “I think too of Haunted, and the particular poignancy that both Shane and Sinead O’Connor have left us in such quick succession.” He added: “It was a great honour for me, as President of Ireland, to present Shane with a lifetime achievement award in the National Concert Hall in January 2018 as we marked his 60th birthday. A richly deserved honour.” Amongst those paying tribute include Nick Cave, Micheal Martin and Leo Varadkar. One person unlikely to pay tribute is the outspoken actor and commentator Laurence Fox who was once called a 'herronvolk sh**e' by The Pogues Twitter/X account after he complained about the BBC censoring a version of 'Fairytale of New York.' Although Fox has since removed his tweet, the Pogues putdown is still live, leading many to reshare it in memory of MacGowan. Additional reporting by PA. Jeremy Vine's latest on-air gaffe is textbook Alan Partridge
Radio presenter Jeremy Vine has given listeners perhaps the most quintessentially “Alan Partridge” moment when reading out a surprisingly morbid story on his BBC Radio 2 show. Vine, 58, was telling a tale about an eight-year-old who was boating with their family on the River Hull live on his show. While reading up to the point when the writer’s 12-year-old brother took control of the boat and drove it into a bridge, he started laughing. “I don’t know why I’m laughing,” he said. The contents of the letter, however, were about to get extremely dark. Vine, reading out the story, said: "When I was eight, my parents had a boat on the River Hull, one day it rained and the river rose, my parents let my 12-year-old brother drive the boat. “We were sunbathing on deck, I went to get a drink just as the galley caved in, because what he'd done is accelerated..." Chuckling, Vine continued: "...into Tickton Bridge... I don't know why I'm laughing....okay, this is not good. "The collision took my mum's arm off...blimey O'Riley... I didn't see that coming.” The listener wrote that they would have been "decapitated" if they had still been on the boat's deck. Jeremy ended with: "Okay...well that's slightly lowered the mood." Sharing the post on social media, one listener said: “Purest Alan Partridge moment from Vine, here. Gold.” Vine responded: "I can only apologise." Oops. Young Thug's lawyer claims his name stands for 'truly humble under god'
Young Thug's attorney said his moniker actually stands for "Truly Humble Under God" whilst defending him in his RICO trial. "Most people think about a thug as a criminal, but to Jeffery, 'thug' had a different meaning," said lawyer Brian Steel in an Atlanta court on Thursday. Steel said that Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, wanted to break his community out of poverty and an "endless cycle of hopelessness," and that if he achieved his goal, he would be "Truly Humble Under God." "That's what 'thug' means," said Steel, who also alluded to Tupac Shakir saying "Thug Life" was an acronym for denouncing hate. Williams has been charged with cofounding and running an Atlanta street gang called Young Slime Life by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Young Slime Life shares an acronym with Williams' record label Young Stoner Life. Other claims made during his opening statement included Steel saying that the gang call themselves YSL "because the pants, tight-fitting pants, the women's pants that they're wearing it says YSL, Yves Saint Laurent. That's where it comes from." Another argument made by Steel was that 'pushing P', the title of a song featuring Young Thug, was short for "pushing positivity." Prosecutors had accused Williams of flashing a gang sign in a photo online, but Steel claimed he was simply forming a 'P' with his fingers. "It means, in any circumstance you're in, if you think positively about something, you can make it through. You're pushing positivity," said Steel. Steel's main argument is that prosecutors had misrepresented evidence, and that it makes no sense for Williams to be running a street gang whilst already being a successful rapper." "He's not sitting there telling people to kill people. He doesn't need their money," Steel said. Prosecutors are accusing Williams and 27 other individuals of racketeering, murder, assault, theft, and drug possession. Alleging, Williams to be at the centre of it, with gang members seeking his permission to kill another rapper. Steel has said Williams was wrongly charged on all accounts. A RICO conviction can lead to a prison sentence of up to 20 years. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Rihanna's Savage X Fenty was given a worse ethics rating than Shein - and fans are shocked
Global advocacy organisation Remake reported in February that Rihanna's clothing brand Savage x Fenty score worse Than Shein in ethical practices. Rhianna, now officially a billionaire, has been praised not only for her music career, but also for her brand Savage X Fenty for showing industry competitors what inclusivity and diversity should look like. But Remake's Fashion Accountability Report scored Savage X Fenty only 4 out of 150 possible points. With Shein even outranking Rihanna's brand. With the organisation concluding the superstar's brand "blatantly disregards industry standards when it comes to social and environmental disclosures, merely noting on its website that products are 'imported.'" Most of its products use oil-based synthetic materials, and the brand hasn't set any reduction targets for this or its carbon emissions. It also lacks a Supplier Code of Conduct to define guidelines for assessing factories' compliance with international labour standards. Savage X Fenty was also fined £1 million by Santa Clara County and four other California local governments for allegedly defrauding consumers. Despite the findings being reported in February, fans of Rihanna are only just finding it, and they're shocked to say the least. "Worse than Shein is crazy," wrote one user. Many also found it unbelievable that the brand scored worse than Shein, but charged much more for their product. However, many said they weren't shocked given Rihanna's billionaire status: indy100 has contacted Savage X Fenty for comment. 8 of the best quotes from Jennifer Lawrence interviewing Kylie Jenner
Jennifer Lawrence is widely known to be a super fan of the Kardashians and even joked about her "obsession" when she interviewed Kim Kardashian as the guest host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2017. The pair discussed how they first met and when Lawrence got drunk with matriarch Kris Jenner. But now Lawrence has interviewed another member of the Kardashian clan, the youngest sister Kylie Jenner for Interview Magazine where they discuss everyone from Jenner's make-up brand, family, having kids, and plastic surgery rumours. Here are some of the best quotes from the interview: Kylie is not letting the haters get to her When asked by Lawrence what or who inspires her, Jenner noted how her mother and family are sources of inspiration and when inspired she does take notes. "I make notes if I’m getting inspiration. I’m online a lot. Also the haters fuel me," Jenner said. To which Lawrence replied: "That’s so Kim of you," prompting Jenner to laugh in agreement. Kylie has a nanny for her dogs Lawrence asked Jenner aka "little mogul," the best hire she's made in her career and Jenner revealed it's to do with her dogs. "Probably my dog nanny, since I have seven dogs," she said, and Lawrence questioned why she had seven dogs. Jenner replied laughing: "Because they kept multiplying. One of them had children and I had to keep the family together." Kylie's paparazzi "horror stories" as a teen Jenner has been in the spotlight from a young age and revealed how she has some "horror stories," from her experiences with the paparazzi. "But with the paparazzi, it’s been really hard. I’ve had some horror stories," she said, as Lawrence asked whether she would like to share any of them Jenner revealed: "Just, like, when I was 16 and these 50-year-old men were saying, “Hi, little slut,” and— To which Lawrence interrupted with her reaction: "Oh my god." "Trying to shoot up my skirt and jumping out of the bushes, scaring me, blocking my car. It was actually worse when I was younger," Jenner added and says how she can't imagine not growing up in the public eye and notes it's helped as she has "nothing to refer back to." Khloe is everyone's mother Out of all of her sisters, Jenner says Khloe is closest to her daughter Stormi, and Lawrence had a comical response. "Well, Khloe’s everybody’s mother. I want her to be my son’s mother," she joked. "She’s everyone’s second mother," Jenner agreed. "She was my second mother. So to see Stormi have that same relationship with Khloe, it warms my heart every time." Both Jennifer and Kylie are Leos With Lawrence born on August 15 and Jenner on August 10 - both of them share the same astrology sign. "But you and Kendall are so different," Lawrence said. "You and me are Leos. We’re happy, excited golden retrievers. And Kendall, of course, is a Scorpio like our mother, Kris." On plastic surgery rumours Both Lawrence and Jenner have been subject to plastic surgery rumours over the years and discussed this as well as the power of makeup. "...it's incredible what makeup can do because I work with Hung [Vanngo], who overlines the lip, and I call him a plastic surgeon, because everybody in the last few months since I’ve been working with him is convinced that I had eye surgery," Lawrence explained. The actor later added: " Well, apparently I’ve had full plastic surgery." Though Jenner disagreed and noted "It is amazing what makeup can do," before sharing how people compared photos of her from when she was younger. "I did end up getting lip fillers, but it’s also the same with me," she said. "I’ll see before and after photos when I’m 12 years old versus 26 and my eyebrows are filled differently. I have contour on. I’m like,“How can you compare my 12-year-old face and say I’ve gotten my jaw shaved and eyelids removed?” I’m like, “What are we talking about?” Lawrence also added how she too is compared to her 19-year-old self but argues that is due to different factors that aren't surgery - “I grew up. I lost baby weight in my face, and my face changed because I’m aging.” Kylie's greyhound dogs remind her of sister Kendall In a strange twist, Lawrence asked Jenner: "Do you think that you have greyhound dogs because they remind you of Kendall?" As Jenner agreed it's "part of it," and how she "loves seeing little Kendalls run around." Lawrence then revealed she used to have an Italian greyhound chihuahua called her Kendall Jenner. Kylie on her friendship reconciliation with Jordyn Woods On a final note, Lawrence asked Jenner about reconnecting with her former BFF Jordyn Woods, after the Tristan Thompson cheating scandal. Jenner explained how they "stayed in touch throughout the years" and "never fully cut each other off," and naturally decided they wanted to get sushi - "we don’t want to hide anymore." "We were so attached at the hip that we needed space to grow into the people that we were supposed to be," she added. Dolly Parton doesn't text because 'it's too much to think about'
Dolly Parton has been in the news recently for multiple reasons. Her new album Rockstar is the number-one in the US - the first number-one album of her career. She also stirred some conservatives over the outfit she wore at the NFL halftime show, which some suggested was inappropriate for her age. But now, she's going viral for sharing that she doesn't text. And honestly, same. Speaking to Drew Barrymore, the country star said "I don't want to talk to everybody that wants to talk to me. I don't text 'cause I don't want to have to answer." "If somebody calls me, I'll answer it if I want to talk to them or I'll call them back when I can," she continued. "Otherwise, I've got too much on to think about than to clutter my mind up with everything else." She clarified that she's "not a stupid person" and that if she really wanted to text she could "learn". "I'd rather just have my fax machine and [they can] call in creative stuff to my crew. I just don't have time to sit with a phone in my face all day." And she might have a point. Psychotherapist Maggie Mulqueen wrote for NBC that texting, although offering us a higher quantity of interaction, actually decreases the quality of relationships. "Texting breeds not just grammar and spelling illiteracy but, more importantly, emotional illiteracy as well," Mulqueen wrote. So maybe we should all try to be a bit more like Dolly Parton. Taylor Swift fans aren't happy about her recent 'cash grabs'
Taylor Swift fans have expressed their disappointment at the singer branding her a "capitalist queen" following the announcement that her Eras Tour concert film will be available to rent next month. From 13 December - Swift’s 34th birthday - the recording-breaking box office film will be available to rent on Apple TV+, Vudu, Prime Video, Xfinity, Google Play and YouTube. It will also be an extended version of the movie and include three extra songs – “Wildest Dreams”, “The Archer” and “Long Live." "Hi! Well, so, basically I have a birthday coming up and I was thinking a fun way to celebrate the year we’ve had together would be to make The Eras Tour Concert Film available for you to watch at home!" Swift wrote on social media. "Very happy to be able to tell you that the extended version of the film including “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer” and “Long Live” will be available to rent on demand in the US, Canada & additional countries to be announced soon starting on … you guessed it, December 13." To rent the film for 48 hours in the comfort of your own home will cost $19.89 - a 1989 reference and a price some Swifties and other social media users aren't too pleased with. This discussion comes after Swift hit billionaire status last month with a $1.1bn fortune according to Forbes. Though there were fans who were defending Swift and noted the rental prices of other popular movies this year such as Barbie.. It's not the first time Swift has come under fire, as she was previously criticised for her limited edition merchandise drops. During the release of Midnights, the Anti-Hero singer showed fans how they could create a clock if they bought four versions of the vinyl which each had a part of the clock face on the back of the jackets and also included fans needing to purchase of the clock hand separately. These different versions of the album also each had a different bonus track, so fans who wanted each extra song on vinyl would have to buy every version. Her most recent release, 1989 (Taylor's Version) saw the release of four different vinyl versions of the album - each with the same songs but with a different themed colour and cover photo of Swift. The first limited edition drop was the Sunrise Boulevard Yellow where fans were informed it would only be available for a limited time (48 hours) so many rushed to buy it. However, after those two days Swifties were surprised to hear about another limited drop - this time the Aquamarine Green version which again was available just for 48 hours. While the vinyls were $31.89 each, due to the rollout of the drops they couldn't be purchased together meaning they were have to pay separate shipping costs. “Why. So. Many. Version. Of. The. Same. Damn. Album. Taylor. Why. So. Many. Version. Of. The. Same. Damn. Album. Taylor. I cannot deal with the money grabbing feel," one fan asked on the Taylor Swift subreddit. "This is messy! messy dishonest sales tactics! every era it gets worse I swear! I don’t think taylor is directly responsible for this manufactured fomo-based sales strategy, but wow girlie. This is a piece of work," another fan wrote. How to join the indy100's free WhatsApp channel Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Controversial comedian Matt Rife says people are 'jealous' of him like they were with 'Bin Laden'
A clip from earlier this year of controversial comedian Matt Rife on influencer Tana Mongeau's podcast CANCELLED has gone viral after his bizarre response to a question. When appearing on Mongeau's podcast this summer he shared a recent "epiphany" he had. "So many f**king people hate me," he begins by saying. "For really no reason, and it really made me realise that people only hate somebody they're jealous of." He goes onto say, "I've been guilty of hating people, and when I've fully sat back and thought about it was because I was jealous of where that person was in their life. I thought maybe they'd gotten an opportunity that I should have gotten." Mongeau then asked "do you think people were hate Osama bin Laden are jealous of him?" "Yeah," Rife is heard saying, before the clip ends. In the episode Rife actually goes on to joke, "yeah of course! They're mad that he was the one calling the shots." On Twitter/X many called Rife an "idiot" and praised Mongeau's question: Rife recently came under fire for sexist jokes, specifically one about domestic violence from his show Netflix special Natural Selection. In the show tells an anecdote about a restaurant server with a black eye, who his friend claims 'should be in the kitchen' so no one can see her. "I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn't have that black eye", Rife then says. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Australian TikToker claims he's now 'dating' Sydney Sweeney after she slid into his DMs
A man has gone viral for jokingly claiming he's now dating Sydney Sweeney after she slid in his DMs. Aussie Miles Shepherd turned to TikTok to share his casual day at the beach which took a bizarre turn. In the clip that racked up four million views online, Miles was left starstruck when the Euphoria actress appeared out of nowhere. His video not only caught the attention of fellow TikTokers and the media, but also Sweeney herself who dropped him a message on Instagram reading: "u should've said hi". People were desperate to know what he responded – and he certainly did not disappoint by sharing that he asked her out. His follow-up clips then hilariously joked the pair were now dating. @mileshep #goldcoast #aus #beach #fyp #sydney #sydneysweeney "Obviously, the DMs between myself and Sydney have gone completely viral. So just wanted to come on here and tell the truth of the matter, which is Sydney and I are now seeing each other," he humoured. "And you know, the last few days has been like a movie, some would say it’s like we’re filming our own little rom-com." "For those of you saying she’s engaged, like, I don’t see a ring on. I don’t see a ring there. So we’re working through that – that’s all getting organised behind the scenes," he continued. @mileshep Replying to @rubyxcw pressure moments. Does this stand up?? #sydneysweeney #goldcoast #beach #dm Miles went on to jokingly ask people to respect their privacy. The clips were soon flooded with comments from TikTokers left in hysterics. "Well done for playing along mate," one wrote, while another added: "Can't wait for the wedding." Meanwhile, a third said: "You’re genuinely so funny. good for you mate seriously."
