Why is MrBeast being sued by the company making his burgers?
YouTuber MrBeast is being counter-sued for $100 million by Virtual Dining Concepts, the company behind Beast Burger restaurants. MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, shared in June that he was going to be “moving on” from his Beast Burger restaurants in order to concentrate more on his snack business with his chocolate bar brand Feastables. Just over two years ago Donaldson partnered with Virtual Dining Concepts (VDC) to launch over 2,000 ‘ghost kitchens’ to make Beast Burger available across the United States. VDC are suing Donaldson for failing to honour his contractual obligations, as well as intentional tortious interference. The lawsuit was filed on Monday morning in the Supreme Court of the State of New York for the County of New York. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The suit, obtained by Variety, is a response to Donaldson suing VDC and its parent company last month, wanting to terminate the deal for his restaurant chain, alleging the burgers it served were called “disgusting,” “revolting” and “inedible” which damaged his reputation. Last week, VDC hit back at the suit claiming it was “riddled with false statements and inaccuracies”, as well as calling it “meritless” and “ill-advised”. “This case is about a social media celebrity who believes his fame means that his word does not matter, that the facts do not matter, and that he can renege and breach his contractual obligations without consequence,” the suit states. “He is mistaken.” The counter-suit claims that Donaldson had breached the parties’ agreements and interfered with business dealings. As a result, it has damaged the reputation of MrBeast Burger and VDC, turned away customers and ruined relationships with suppliers and vendors. The lawsuit also contains examples of deleted tweets from the YouTube star’s account where he writes that he wished to close the burger business, writing: “the company I partnered with won’t let me stop even though it’s terrible for my brand.” VDC was co-founded by Robert Earl, who is the founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood. The company has backed celebrity brands including those from Mariah Carey and Mario Lopez. Have your say in our news democracy. 'Barbie' and 'Ken' baby name searches are skyrocketing
There has been a significant increase in searches for Barbie and Ken baby names since Greta Gerwig's record-breaking film hit the big screen. The Barbie hysteria continues to thrive and survive another day since the Warner Bros drop on 21 July. We've had food collaborations, Airbnb partnerships, Barbiecore fashion taking over social feeds across the globe – and now, we are expecting a spike in newborns being called Barbie and Ken. Babynames.com, a site dedicated to providing much-needed inspo for mums-to-be, witnessed a staggering 300 per cent in searches for Margot Robbie's character, Barbie. They told TMZ that searches for Ken also skyrocketed with a 200 per cent increase. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Barbie | Main Trailer www.youtube.com Barbie broke records worldwide and is now considered the highest-grossest film by a female director. Since its opening weekend, the film is said to have racked up $1 billion in ticket sales, breaking new records and jumping ahead of Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman in 2017 ($821.8 million). Only 53 films have ever surpassed the $1b mark. Ahead of the Barbie release, Robbie already had an inkling it would make a billion dollars. The Australian actress, who also doubled up as a producer on the film, told Collider that during an initial pitching meeting, she reinforced how hugely successful films such as Jurassic Park always paired "a big idea with a visionary director." "I was like, 'And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig,'" she told the outlet. "And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?!" Have your say in our news democracy. Triple H hints at WWE collaboration for Elon Musk's Zuckerberg fight
Elon Musk is busy preparing for his fight against Mark Zuckerberg, and he might be getting a little helping hand from none other than WWE royalty Triple H. The wrestler who is the CCO and head of creative for WWE has reached out to Musk and offered to help him get ready for the big showdown against the Meta CEO. Musk and Zuckerberg seemingly agreed to a cage match after it was leaked that Zuckerberg's Meta was planning to release a rival to Twitter called Threads. After Musk said he’d be up for a cage match if he is”, Zuckerberg then posted a screenshot of Musk's tweet to his Instagram story saying "send me location". Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Triple H, real name Paul Levesque, has now responded to a post from Musk, where the Tesla CEO described his fighting style as “WWE”. The wrestler referenced Twitter’s recent rebrand to “X” in his reply, offering to help by writing: "Say the word, @elonmusk. I know a thing or two about making an X sign" adding a GIF of him making the infamous 'Suck It' gesture. Wrestling fans will know that Triple H was a co-founder of the D-Generation X (DX) stable, which are a major faction in WWE history. He’s not a bad guy to have in your corner for something like this, we’d say – Triple H is one of the most celebrated wrestlers of all time and retired in 2022 as a 14-time world champion. Triple H is now in charge of the creative team at WWE, and he’s been keeping a close eye on the touted fight between Musk and Zuckerberg. The wrestler hasn’t always been such a big fan of Musk, though. Back in 2021, he appeared on the Good Time show and criticised his business practices in a tongue-in-cheek rant before calling him out for a fight. "So, if you want to disrespect our business, I will anytime, anyplace, anywhere [fight you]. Elon Musk, if you’ve got the guts, if you have what it takes to do this… then you and I will talk about what I really want to talk about, which is taking one of your rockets, launching it from Florida, going up into space, heading to Mars with a team from the Performance Center, where we then put on the largest spectacle the universe has ever seen – WrestleMania Mars," Triple H said. Meanwhile, in a post on August 6 in Meta’s recently launched social media platform Threads, Zuckerberg said he had proposed 26 August for the bout with Musk. “I’m ready today. I suggested Aug 26 when he first challenged, but he hasn’t confirmed. Not holding my breath,” the Meta chief said in response to Musk’s post on Twitter, which has been rebranded as X.
