'Bella Hadid body measurement' TikTok trend branded 'toxic'
'Bella Hadid body measurement' TikTok trend branded 'toxic'
A new "toxic" trend is taking over TikTok that involves people comparing their body measurements to Bella Hadid – and some users are concerned. While social media can sometimes be a force for good, other corners of the internet have received several side eyes for their damaging messages. A quick TikTok search into 'Bella Hadid measurements' will reveal hundreds of videos of people sharing their measurements. As we know, Hadid is a supermodel and the comparisons haven't sat easily with many users, as it perpetuates unrealistic beauty standards. "When Bella Hadid’s measurements are 34-24-32 and mine are 31-22-33," one person wrote in a viral clip that's racked up almost half a million likes. The TikToker went on to call the measurements a "big flex in my life." Another person wrote: "POV I have the same measurements as Bella Hadid, nothing can hurt my feelings, I don't care". Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter While the clips are seemingly intended to be lighthearted, many more TikTokers have hit back at its "toxic" roots – especially given TikTok is predominantly a Gen-Z app. Creator Felix (@fmjat) raised the concern, asking viewers: "Aren’t these Bella Hadid measurements low-key a step back backward and hypocritical?" @fmjat bare in mind these are the same gurlies saying all bodys r beautiful ?? #bellahadid #bodypositivity #models #modelcommunity #bodyimage His clip was met with people who agreed on the matter, with one writing: "Like.. the trend is so bad for impressionable teens/ppl on this app with eating disorders." Another user simply put it: "The fixation on bodies is tiring." Meanwhile, a third person chimed in: "Can we all say the things we like ab our bodies and accept the fact that we’re all gonna see things we don’t relate to without freaking out." Lewis Capaldi gave an incredible reaction to a school’s ‘deliberately odd’ statue of him
Everyone’s favourite self-deprecating Scot, Lewis Capaldi, set his old school a challenge to create a “deliberately odd” sculpture of him – and… well… they certainly delivered. The “Someone You Loved” singer, whose second album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent came out on Friday, made a visit to St Kentigern’s Academy in West Lothian on Tuesday morning – ahead of two intimate acoustic performances in Edinburgh later. Sharing pictures of the big unveiling to Twitter, the academy’s art department wrote: “So today our Top Secret project was unveiled at SWG3 with a young musician and ex-pupil who has done quite well – Lewis Capaldi. “The amazing S4 students and art staff created a deliberately odd sculpture of Lewis as requested by his team. He loved it and laughed along!” The artwork was created to coincide with the release of Capaldi's sophomore album, which follows on from his 2019 debut Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent. After being presented with the sculpture, the "Forget Me" songwriter joked: “You’ve really captured my essence. It’s pretty weird-looking, but I like it.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter He went on to thank the students for creating it, saying he does “genuinely love it” but that it “will give me nightmares”. “It’s a weird thing to look at – like yourself, but not yourself.” And Twitter was impressed by the creation too: Of course, it’s not the first eyebrow-raising piece of art to be made in recent years, as back in 2012 a botched attempt to restore a painting of Jesus Christ went viral because it was that bad. Then in 2017, there was the infamous sculpture/bust of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, which was just as troubling. Even former prime minister Liz Truss had an unflattering sculpture made of her last year. Budding artists out there, please never change. Have your say in our news democracy. Janelle Monae says that they're 'much happier' when they're topless
Janelle Monáe has said that they’re “much happier” being topless after posing for a new cover shoot. The singer and actor posed for Rolling Stone’s Pride issue after appearing to explore a more sexually liberal style in 2023 with a series of album promos. Monáe, who uses they/them pronouns, announced their new album, The Age of Pleasure, with a teaser clip of the NSFW video which sees them emerging from a pool wearing a translucent skin-tight t-shirt with the word “Pleasure” written across the front. The performer's bare breasts could be seen through the wet t-shirt and Monáe says it’s all part of being a “free-ass mother****er”. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter “I’m much happier when my titties are out, and I can run around free,” Monáe told Rolling Stone. The singer also posted the new album artwork for The Age of Pleasure which sees her swimming topless underwater. Monáe described the album as their “most sensual and indulgent album yet”, saying: “Most people don’t understand what’s going on in my brain. Community has been so helpful to me; it’s beautiful that I have a title called The Age of Pleasure because it actually re-centers me. “It’s not about an album anymore. I’ve changed my whole f–king lifestyle.” The singer added: “I want things to feel so true to my life … I used to consider myself a futurist. I know what that means, to obsess about the next thing. A present tourist is what I’m calling myself right now. I’m actively focusing on being present. “This album is not about a fight,” they shared. “It’s about living in an oasis created by us for us. Even with everything going on in the world, this is our moment to breathe together, unapologetically taking this beat to enjoy — to hurry up and live.” Have your say in our news democracy. The superstar treated her entourage before taking to the stage at Murrayfield Stadium in Scotland with a wide range of options including 50 sunset burgers, 30 fino pittas, 30 butterfly burgers, 60 chicken pittas, 20 beanie burgers and 10 chicken wings. 5 things we learnt from Kim Kardashian's big podcast interview
5 things we learnt from Kim Kardashian's big podcast interview
Kim Kardashian appeared on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast where she was incredibly candid about her past relationships, parenthood and things she "wished she knew sooner". Since launching his YouTube channel in 2016, Shetty has made a name for himself as an award-winning podcaster, author and life coach. His clips have since garnered over 4 billion views and a collective social media following of 20 million. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter In an upload this week, Shetty sat down with the business mogul to discuss many areas of her life. Here are five revelations we took from the episode: Parenting challenges The business mogul opened up about the realities of having four children while speaking to Shetty. She candidly shared how there are some nights she would "cry myself to sleep," adding: "Like, holy s***, this f****** tornado in my house. Like, what just happened?" "With all the moods and the personalities and sometimes they're fighting, and you know, there's no one there." She went on to call "mom guilt" the "hardest thing." "You have to also separate though and understand that you need your own bit of sanity, so you have to do what makes you happy. Working for me, I love working, so that makes me happy. Anytime I think something's really hard, I dive into work," Kardashian said. According to the star, quality time with her children make them feel cared about. "You feel like you're the worst mom if something's going on and you can't fix it. You have no idea how to change it, your kids are fighting, whatever it is." She added: "I think how to balance work with that is when you're home being really present. Kids, all they want is time. They just want your time." "You cannot help people that don't want the help" While Kardashian didn't explicitly name her ex-husband Kanye West, she believes that a break-up doesn't necessarily mean it was a "failure". "Sometimes I feel like people think that if a relationship doesn't work out that it's a failure, but I don't really look at it like that 15 years together, 10 years. That's not a failure. That is so beautiful," she said. She also said she learned how you "cannot help people that don't want the help". "You can't force your beliefs and project that on someone that thinks something totally different," she went on to add, before explaining how its "okay to have those different views." However, "if you don't align in the same values and morals and things at your core, then it's okay to realise that this life is so short, and you should go and find the people that do align with what you really believe in." Her current dating life While Kardashian hasn't ruled out any future romantic relationships following her split from comedian Pete Davidson in August 2022, she made clear that she wants to take it slow. "I definitely will take my time, and I think there's so many factors, especially when you have kids, of being mindful of people that enter in your life," Kardashian told Shetty. "If I can look at everything that I did wrong and try to not make the same mistakes and really take my time, I think it just has to be different for me. ... I'm so comfortable taking my time to not rush it. There's so much going on that I'm not lonely." She no longer values materialistic things Kardashian noted that her interest in material things has diminished over the years. "First time, I packed up my entire shoe and bag closet," she said, referring to the California wildfires. "Third time, leave all the bags and shoes, I don't need 'em. We got all the photos, we got my little blankie when I was little, the kids' stuff. Fourth time, leave everything. Me and my babies, that's all I need." Have your say in our news democracy.
