Sarah Jessica Parker channels Carrie Bradshaw in mismatched shoes
Sarah Jessica Parker channels Carrie Bradshaw in mismatched shoes
Sarah Jessica Parker seemed to pay homage to her character Carrie Bradshaw as she took to the red carpet in New York on Thursday (5 October). The And Just Like That and Sex And The City star paired her black tutu-inspired dress with mismatching shoes at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala. Parker, 58, tapped into the “balletcore” trend with a black bow in her hair and a full skirt in the Carolina Herrera dress – perhaps a nod to the white tulle mini skirt she wore in the opening sequence of Sex And The City. Dance has been a big theme on the runways of fashion month in September – Victoria Beckham’s spring/summer 2024 Paris Fashion Week show was inspired by her childhood love of ballet, with the collection full of diaphanous tulle gowns. But the most notable part of Parker’s outfit was undoubtedly her footwear. With one pearlescent pink high heel and the other black – both from the star’s own brand, SJP Collection, and with statement buckles – the shoes seem to hark back to her character Carrie in an episode of Sex And The City. In a 2000 episode of the show called Escape From New York, Carrie and her friends head to Los Angeles – and she dons a white dress with floral detailing, worn with one blue and one pink Christian Louboutin strappy sandals. In an Instagram comment in 2019, Parker explained the sartorial decision: “We had 2 pairs of what I believe are @louboutinworld scrappy [sic] sandals. Pat [costume designer Patricia Field] and I chose to do 1 of each. Perhaps because both were so delicious in color and seemed in harmony with the dress but also because we simply loved doing 1 of each.” Mismatched shoes are becoming something of a signature for Parker: she wore one bright pink and one yellow high heel to attend the same gala event in 2019. Parker, who sits on the board of directors of the New York City Ballet, was joined on the red carpet by her husband, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off actor Matthew Broderick. Celebrities including talk show host Andy Cohen and actresses Laverne Cox and Claire Danes also attended the event. Sprint qualifying delayed in Qatar due to tyre safety fears
Sprint qualifying delayed in Qatar due to tyre safety fears
Qualifying for Saturday’s sprint race in Qatar has been pushed back amid fears over the safety of the tyres. The running had been due to start at 4pm local time (2pm BST), but it will be delayed by 20 minutes following revised track limits at the Lusail International Circuit. The drivers will instead take part in an additional 10 minutes of practice at 4pm to familiarise themselves with the changes made to the track at Turns 12 and 13 prior to qualifying. Formula One’s governing body, the FIA, said “a separation in the sidewall between the topping compound and the carcass cords” were discovered on the Pirelli tyres following yesterday’s one-hour running. The FIA said the problem is likely to have been caused by a number of the high kerbs used at the circuit. Additional analysis will take place following today’s 19-lap race, and further action – which will include three mandatory tyre stops – may be taken for Sunday’s grand prix which runs for 57 laps. Max Verstappen will be crowned champion of the world for a third time if he finishes sixth or Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez fails to finish outside the top three in Saturday’s sprint. F1 Qatar Grand Prix LIVE: Sprint race shootout updates and times at Lusail
F1 Qatar Grand Prix LIVE: Sprint race shootout updates and times at Lusail
Max Verstappen took pole position for Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix as the indomitable Dutchman closes in on his third world title. Verstappen will be crowned champion of the world if he finishes at least sixth in Saturday’s 19-lap race at the Lusail International Circuit. And the Red Bull driver started his quest to become just the 11th driver in history to win the title on more than two occasions in typically irresistible fashion by clocking the fastest time in qualifying. In terms of the championship mathematics, Verstappen’s pole lap for Sunday’s main event will be redundant if he secures three points in Saturday’s sprint – the starting order for which will be determined by a second qualifying session here on Saturday afternoon – or Sergio Perez fails finish inside the top three. The probability of both are high. As Verstappen raced to top spot, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton securing second and third on the grid for Mercedes, Perez failed to make it out of Q2. Pep Guardiola does not think Arsenal clash will have major bearing on title race
Pep Guardiola does not think Arsenal clash will have major bearing on title race
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola doubts Sunday’s visit to Arsenal will have a significant impact on who wins the Premier League this season. Arsenal flourished under former City assistant Mikel Arteta last season but settled up for a runners-up spot as Guardiola’s side claimed a third successive top-flight triumph en route to a historic treble. The Gunners are unbeaten after seven matches of this campaign and lie one point behind City, who are bidding to bounce back from last weekend’s surprise 2-1 defeat at Wolves. Guardiola, though, insisted this showdown being so early in the season places less of an emphasis on the title race, even if he regards Arsenal as one of their main rivals. He said: “This will not define a lot. It will be different when they come here at the Etihad (at the end of March) – then it will depend on the situations we are in.” Instead Guardiola’s main focus in the weeks ahead is on guaranteeing progression from their Champions League group, having started the defence of their crown with wins over Red Star Belgrade and Leipzig. He said: “We know where we came from with the treble. After that the tendency is to go down. We can play better or worse but in general in the training sessions the focus is there. “We made an incredible step forward in the Champions League. In this month, the Champions League is the most important thing by far, until February when it starts again. “What I want is to arrive here in February when we start the Champions League to be in the competitions and that it’s close. To be close to the top of the league and keep the distance short and make the last 10 games in our competition ‘let’s do it again’. “(If you qualify for the Champions League knockout stages) you can focus on the Premier League until it is back again. We made a big step on Wednesday (by beating Leipzig), now we have Arsenal.” Guardiola will be without Rodri this weekend as the midfielder serves the final game of a three-match domestic suspension while John Stones and Kevin de Bruyne remain on the sidelines. De Bruyne is a long-term absentee after undergoing hamstring surgery but his absence has not unduly troubled City, who have found the back of the net at least once in every league game this season. Guardiola said: “Since I arrived we scored a lot of goals, a lot. We have this ability with proper strikers, false nines, wingers, different pressing, different build ups. I am delighted with everyone.” If City lose at the Emirates Stadium, it would mark the first time they have been beaten in successive league games since December 2018. Asked to pinpoint why they have been so successful in bouncing straight back from a defeat, Guardiola added: “It shows what we have done. It is the exception – what we have done is incredible.” Read More Erling Haaland says Premier League goal record ‘something you can’t think of’ Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to bring City losing streak to an end On this day in 2010: Rebecca Adlington wins Commonwealth Games 800m gold Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou would eradicate VAR in its current form Brennan Johnson’s ‘safety and health’ a priority for Wales boss Rob Page Erik Ten Hag insists managing Manchester United is not an impossible job

Erling Haaland says Premier League goal record ‘something you can’t think of’
Erling Haaland has not ruled out breaking Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record. Shearer scored 260 Premier League goals in 441 appearances during 14 seasons as a player with Blackburn and Newcastle before retiring in 2006. Norway and Manchester City striker Haaland has scored 44 Premier League goals in 42 appearances since arriving in England from Borussia Dortmund in time for the start of the 2022-23 season. The 23-year-old, who has notched eight goals in seven top-flight games this season, jokingly told the Telegraph: “How long is my contract? Three years and 10 months (left)? So, there is still time to do it, no?” When asked if he was serious about breaking the record during that time, Haaland added: “I didn’t say that! “That’s something you can’t think of. You have to think of the next game, the season and then these things come after a while. But if I will still be 15 years longer in England then why not? We will see.” Haaland, who has scored a total of 199 goals in 203 career appearances for Salzburg, Dortmund, City and Norway, said it was now a bigger story whenever he does not hit the target. Norwegian media when I don’t score: Goalless! That’s the headline. That’s how it is. It’s a good thing. I am not complaining at all but, also, I signed for City to score goals Erling Haaland He said: “Norwegian media when I don’t score: Goalless! That’s the headline. That’s how it is. It’s a good thing. I am not complaining at all but, also, I signed for City to score goals. “So, it was also a bit expected – maybe not so many – but I am still the one who is going to get the ball in the back of the net.” Haaland can often appear to drift out of games without touching the ball for long periods and explained how he slips into a ‘zombie’ state as he waits for his chance. “I go out of my body and become a zombie,” he added. “It’s kind of a bit of a ‘zone out’. Like looking around. Waiting for the chance. And when the chance comes I know I have to be ready, you know?” Read More Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to bring City losing streak to an end On this day in 2010: Rebecca Adlington wins Commonwealth Games 800m gold Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou would eradicate VAR in its current form
