Elon Musk forces firms to pay X $1,000 to keep gold ticks
Elon Musk forces firms to pay X $1,000 to keep gold ticks
Elon Musk will force companies on X to pay at least $1,000 (£770) per month in order to keep their verified status on the platform. From 7 August, any brand that does not pay the fee to the company formerly known as Twitter will lose the gold check mark that appears next to the account name. The latest strategy, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal, comes amid declining ad revenues and fresh competition from text-based platforms launched by Meta and TikTok. Mr Musk responded to the report by stating that brands could also pay $1,000 per month for a verified organisation subscription. “This more than pays for itself in organic reach,” he posted on X. “The reason for the $1,000/ month is to set a moderately high bar to be a verified org, so that an org must be of non-trivial size to qualify and to make it expensive for scammers to create millions of accounts.” Earlier this month, the tech billionaire revealed that the company was suffering from negative cash flow issues after advertising revenue dropped by 50 per cent following his $44 billion takeover of the platform. Mr Musk has undertaken aggressive cost-cutting measures, which included firing more than 6,000 employees. He has also appointed former advertising executive Linda Yaccarino as the firm’s CEO in an effort to woo advertisers. The rebranding from Twitter to X could also open up new revenue streams, with Mr Musk planning to transform the social network into an “everything app” similar to China’s WeChat. X has already secured money-transmitting licences in three US states, which will allow payments to be integrated into the platform. Ms Yaccarino said on Monday that she believed X represented “the future state of unlimited interactivity”, integrating audio, video, messaging, and the ability to book and pay for goods and services. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we’re just beginning to imagine,” she posted on X. “For years, fans and critics alike have pushed Twitter to dream bigger, to innovate faster, and to fulfil our great potential. X will do that and more.” Read More What is Elon Musk’s ‘everything app’ X? Tori Kelly’s husband shares health update after singer ‘rushed to hospital with blood clots on lungs’
Tori Kelly’s husband has updated fans on the singer’s health after she was rushed to hospital. On Sunday (23 July), the singer was admitted to hospital to reportedly be treated for blood clots in her lungs and legs. According to a report by TMZ, Grammy winner Kelly, 30, was out for dinner with friends when she suffered from an increased heart rate. Kelly reportedly passed out “for a while”. Her friends reportedly drove her to Cedars-Sinai hospital, where she is said to have been treated in intensive care for blood clots around her vital organs. On Wednesday (26 July) night, Kelly’s husband André Murillo shared an update on her condition, explaining that while Kelly was not “out of the woods” yet, her condition was improving. “Tori is smiling again and feeling stronger,” basketball player Murillo wrote on Instagram Stories. “Not fully out of the woods but we see the sun. Just waiting on a few more answers.” Addressing her fans, he added: “Your love and kindness has been overwhelming. Thank you so much!” The Independent has contacted Kelly’s representatives for comment. Following news of her health condition, fans of the Sing 2 voice actor flooded her social media with messages of support. Many said that they were sending prayers to Kelly, who is Christian. “Many prayers for you Tori, prayers for healing and a speedy recovery,” one follower wrote. “I pray in the name of JESUS that Tori gets the help she needs and comes back stronger and healthier than ever,” another commented. One comment read: “I am praying for you!! I had the same thing happen to me!! Passed out in my bathroom December 2020 because of blood clots in my lungs!! I know the power that prayer has and I’m praying hard for you!! You are a goddess and one of my favorite singers!!” Another fan said they were “praying for a miraculous healing” for Kelly. Initially gaining an audience on YouTube as a teenager, Kelly rose to fame on American Idol in 2010. Three years later, she signed with Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun and got a record deal with Capitol Records, under whom she released four studio albums. In 2019, Kelly won two Grammy Awards for Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance/Song for her 2018 sophomore album Hiding Place. Earlier this year, Kelly announced that she had signed a new deal with Epic Records. Her forthcoming EP, titled tori, is scheduled for release on Friday (28 July). Greta Gerwig responds to Barbie criticism after right-wing backlash
Greta Gerwig responds to Barbie criticism after right-wing backlash
Barbie director Greta Gerwig has responded to the torrent of hate that rightwingers in the US have directed at the film, saying it’s “an invitation for everybody to be part of the party”. Speaking to the New York Times, Gerwig was asked if she had anticipated the degree of woke-bashing that rightwing critics have engaged in since the film came out, with some calling it a “man-hating” movie. Gerwig said: “Certainly, there’s a lot of passion. My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men.” She added: “I hope that in all of that passion, if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Barbie’s feminist themes have sparked rage from influencers like Ben Shapiro, who made a bizarre Youtube video last week in which he burned Barbie dolls. Ginger Luckey Gaetz, wife of Republican congressman Matt Gaetz, said the movie “neglects to address any notion of faith or family, and tries to normalise the idea that men and women can’t collaborate positively”. Gerwig also responded to criticism that Mattel, which owns the Barbie doll range and executive produced the movie, interfered in the production creatively, in a scene where a character described the dolls as “sexist and fascist”. She said: “It wasn’t like I ever got the full seal of approval from [Mattel], like, ‘We love it!’ I got a tentative, ‘Well, OK. I see that you are going to do this, so go ahead and we’ll see how it goes.’ “But that’s all you need, and I had faith once it was in there and they saw it that they would embrace it, not fight it. Maybe at the end of the day, my will to have it in was stronger than any other will to take it out.” The backlash has been strong, but the support has been stronger, with Barbie already breaking the record for the highest-ever opening weekend for a female director at $356m.
