Debate erupts over who was hotter - young Robert De Niro or young Al Pacino
Twitter users have been known to debate all manner of topics, but the most recent viral question saw users split over who they thought was hotter – young Robert De Niro or young Al Pacino. It was a question posed by Twitter user Ashely Reese who took to the social media platform to settle a debate at a wedding she was attending. Reese probably wasn’t anticipating that the tweet would go viral, drawing 277,372 votes and over 28 million views. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter She created a poll, explaining, “At a wedding and having a big debate rn. Please vote. Who was hotter?” with the two options being the American actors “Young Al Pacino” and “Young Robert De Niro”. In the comments, people made their arguments and posted pictures to support them. Despite Reese herself arguing for young Al Pacino to take the crown, not everyone was as convinced. Someone argued: “LOVE LOVE PACINO DOWN! But Mr. Bobby D eats him up EVERY TIME. He’s actively doing it right here.” Another urged: “The only right answer.” “This is the best a man has looked,” one Twitter user wrote of young De Niro. Others, however, vehemently agreed with the OP. One person wrote: “This is the correct answer, are half of you having some kind of episode, what on Earth.” “I’m sorry but all you saying De Niro are out of your actual minds, look at this gorgeous man,” someone else argued. Another wrote: “70s Al Pacino was one of the most beautiful people to ever exist on this earth.” In the end, the two acting legends could not be separated as the poll ended with a 50/50 percentage split of the votes. So, we'll probably never know the true answer to this question. Have your say in our news democracy. Eurovision 2023: All the best memes and reactions
Eurovision 2023: All the best memes and reactions
Eurovision 2023 takes place in Liverpool tonight and we've got you covered for all the memes that you are going to need. This year's contest is taking place in the UK as last year's winners, Ukraine are unable to host due to the illegal invasion of their country by Russia and the ongoing war between the two nations. Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky has been prevented from speaking at the grand final but reigning champions Kalush Orchestra believes he would have wanted to. Tymofii Muzychuk, a piper who forms part of the seven-piece, told the PA news agency: “Actually we think that President Zelensky would have wanted to thank all the British people for doing this and, as we can see, Britain took this very responsibly, the UK. And so actually I think it would have been nice for him to talk.” Elsewhere, UK entry Mae Muller has received messages of support from the world of politics, as Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said “we’re all cheering you on”. “Good luck to (Mae Muller) a Kentish Town local, at @Eurovision tonight!” Sir Keir tweeted. “We’re all cheering you on.” Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted: “Tonight we’re rooting for our fellow Londoner Mae Muller in the #Eurovision final.” As the tension mounts, here's how the UK is preparing for the night's activities. Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner have become an instant 'mansplaining' meme
Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner have become an instant 'mansplaining' meme
The celebrity world loves nothing more than when two famous good-looking people get together and create a new power couple. Whereas the internet loves nothing more when that famous couple becomes an instant meme. This year we've already had Taylor Swift and Matty Healy memes as well as Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner memes. Well, now Kylie's sister, Kendall Jenner has been given the meme treatment thanks to her new squeeze, Puerta Rican rapper Bad Bunny. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The pair were at Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals between the LA Lakers and the Golden State Warriors in Los Angeles on Friday and a moment between caught the internet's imagination. As Bad Bunny leaned over to tell Kendall something the model and reality TV star did her best to listen. Although it's unlikely we'll ever know what the two said to each other it turned into a new spin on the classic mansplaining meme. The meme soon found it's way onto wrestling Twitter with many making reference to Bad Bunny's recent match (yes, he actually wrestles now) against Damien Priest at WWE Backlash. Even more obscure takes were available. Incidentally, Bad Bunny, 29, has proven himself to be pretty adept at the wrestling game having impressed since his debut at WrestleMania 37 in 2021 and even competed in last year's Royal Rumble match. No word on if Kendall will soon be involved in WWE but time will tell. Have your say in our news democracy. The Good Doctor 'I am a surgeon' meme explained
The Good Doctor 'I am a surgeon' meme explained
Viral trends are nothing if not unpredictable, so we shouldn’t be surprised that a six-year-old hospital drama has suddenly been thrust into the limelight. The Good Doctor – which stars Feddie Highmore as an autistic medic with savant syndrome – has been running since 2017, but it’s taken until now for it to really catch the attention of social media. A scene from season two of the ABC series is taking the likes of TikTok and Twitter by storm. It shows our protagonist, Dr Shaun Murphy (Highmore), passionately shouting: “I am a surgeon!” And of course, the beauty of viral memes is their total separation from any context, enabling us to apply them to the scenario of our choice. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter But it’s still interesting to know the source of these snippets. In this case, Dr Murphy’s outburst comes from an episode titled ‘Breakdown’ in which he confronts his boss, the hospital’s chief of surgery, Dr Jackson Han. Earlier in the series, Han had relegated Murphy to lab work. But, after successfully saving the life of a patient, the younger doc wants his job back. After all, he is a surgeon. @hnjiaajuz14 #movie #foryou #riddit #fypシ #pyf Since going viral, the scene has undergone a series of extreme edits, featuring SpongeBob, laser eyes, and catchy remixes. And whilst Dr Han (played by Daniel Dae Kim), is basically the show’s heartless baddie, he’s also become the internet’s favourite heartthrob. Still, the show isn’t without its critics, with many condemning the simplistic portrayal of autism as a kind of adorably awkward superpower. Another clip that’s been doing the rounds, taken from a season one episode titled ‘She’, shows Murphy confounded while treating a trans patient. The implication that his ignorant tactlessness is a result of his autism hasn’t sat well with viewers, and was called out well before ‘The Good Doctor’ became a darling of the meme circuit. Still, most people are just enjoying the random beauty of the show’s sudden virality. Thanks to these mystifying algorithms, anything can blow up on your timeline: good (doctor) or bad. TikTok's stomach-churning 'turbulence' trend explained
TikTok's stomach-churning 'turbulence' trend explained
If you thought turbulence on a plane was bad, just wait till you find out what it means on TikTok. That’s right, a trend has emerged whose name was inspired by those unpleasant inflight jolts. Warning: This trend does involve some NSFW material. Head to the video-sharing app, and you’ll find a plethora of clips using the hashtag “turbulence” or close variations. Many of the most viewed options were created by content creator Just Jo, whose videos have been stitched and commented on by the likes of ishowspeed and Kai Cenat who have millions of followers between them. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Indeed, Just Jo is credited with kicking the whole craze off back in 2021. The streamer was performing a dance live on TikTok when he announced that there was a “whole bunch of turbulence” going on. Well, that doesn’t sound so bad, you may say to yourself, but the “dance” in question wasn’t your standard viral routine. Instead, it involved Just Jo slapping his penis loudly from side to side between his thighs – and thus, a new craze was born. Since then, he has published countless follow-ups, showing his skill at rhythmically clapping his gear, getting it to go at top speed, or simply explaining how it's done. @shackav He's unstoppable @JUSTJOOO Turbulence ? #justjoo #turbulence #thugshake #justjoofficial #viral #foryoupage Still, the one saving grace is that the… eh hem… physical mechanisms used to create the “turbulence” are never shown: the videos are filmed from the waist upwards. This leaves the viewer wondering if the slapping sound is really coming from the implied NSFW source, or whether it’s down to a pair of hands belonging to a hidden participant. Regardless, all we can say is this “turbulence” stuff is enough to turn anyone’s stomach. Have your say in our news democracy. Meghan Markle's latest career move has people thinking she's joined WWE
Meghan Markle's latest career move has people thinking she's joined WWE
The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has got people doing a double take with her latest career move, with many mistakenly thinking she has joined WWE. In a report from Variety, Meghan has signed up for representation with the Hollywood talent agency WME, in what will be seen as a lucrative acquisition for the company, which already boasts clients such as Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and tennis great Serena Williams. Meghan's team at WME will include Endeavor CEO Ari Emmanuel as well as top agents Jill Smoller and Brad Slater. While she does have experience as an actor a return to that field is not thought to be on the agenda. Film and television and brand partnerships are more likely to be explored. Sign up to our new free Indy100 weekly newsletter While this is obviously intriguing news from a Meghan and Harry perspective, the news has sideswiped a few people who have mistakenly read WME as 'WWE' aka World Wrestling Entertainment leading to some very puzzled reactions. Just for the record, Meghan Markle has not signed with WWE although we do think she'd have great promo skills and would love to see her work a program with Dominik Mysterio. You never know, maybe her new colleague The Rock could give her some tips. Have your say in our news democracy. People are obsessing over the man with the mullet and moustache at the coronation
People are obsessing over the man with the mullet and moustache at the coronation
Eagle-eyed social media spectators of King Charles III's coronation couldn't take their eyes off one guest, leaving them wondering who it was. The grey-haired man was sporting a mullet and moustache while sitting alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber. His look was completed with a pair of tinted sunglasses. Almost immediately, viewers turned to Twitter, asking who the mysterious "cool" man was, with one joking: "Meghan, you’re not fooling us…" Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Sadly it wasn't her as earlier this month, the palace said in a statement: "Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on 6th May. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet." The man is, of course, Sir Karl Jenkins, composer and instrumentalist. The 79-year-old composed a piece for Charles' coronation titled 'Tros y Garreg', translating to 'Crossing the Stone'. "I am very honoured. It obviously sums up Welsh culture - the harp - and he [the King] has always supported Welsh music," he told the BBC ahead of the event. "I don't know whether he chose it, but he was happy to have it there. I know he likes it otherwise he wouldn't have asked me." He spoke about the late Queen's 1953 coronation, saying: "We had one of the first TV screens in the street, in the village I guess...12in (30cm) screen, two rows of friends and neighbours watching." He added: "I am very honoured. It obviously sums up Welsh culture - the harp - and he [the King] has always supported Welsh music," said Sir Karl. Have your say in our news democracy.
